Depends on the kind of coffee maker you have. The odds are good that it's a drip coffee maker (most common).

A drip coffee maker consists of a a glass carafe (probably your "bottom thingy" sitting on a hot plate with a filter basket (probably your "top") suspended above it. Somewhere there will be a water reservoir. (another top?)

So...put a filter in the filter basket (usually paper, but may be a fine metal mesh,)

put ground coffee in the filter (if the coffee you have is in bean form you'll need to grind it first,) the recommendation is one tablespoon of coffee per each cup of coffee you're making, but most Americans prefer about half of this (one tablespoon coffee for every two cups of coffee,)

Close or replace the filter basket.

Fill the carafe with water up to the amount of coffee that you want (plus a little extra, since some water will stay in the coffee and filter and a little more will evaporate off as steam).

At the top of the coffee maker there is usually a door that hides a reservoir opening. Locate this and pour the water in (do not pour the water directly into the filter basket.)

Replace the pot, turn it on and wait for it to brew.

Of course it's also possible that you can make coffee with a steam, pump driven or stove top espresso maker, a French press (a glass pitcher with a mesh plate on a stick-the press- inside...coffee goes in, boiling water poured over and left to brew, finally the press is replaced and used to force the coffee grounds to the bottom,) an old fashioned stove top or electric percolator, a microwave single cup coffee maker or even a jar of instant or a single serving pouch.

Tell us if your coffeemaker doesn't sound like a drip and I can change my instructions.

Hope this helps.

Enjoy your coffee.

Yech...ixnay on the salt. If it's bitter add water or sugar or cream or milk. Salt is sometimes added by restaurants to coffee to keep it from "going off" as it sits on a warmer. Better to drink it right away or put it into an insulated carafe or thermos. Yuck...I'm having spasms just thinking about salty coffee....Blech...

Well i think you need to go to home economics and start with the basics. That might be a good place or go get a job at a coffee shop that would be a great place to start....water in the top of the coffee pot and coffee filter and the grounds on the bottom.

for the best coffee use a one cup cone and filter the one that is a #4

we buy whole beans of a good quality coffee we grid them as we need them but you can grid them at the store keep them in the freezer

put the filter in the cone and place on what ever cup you are going to serve it in .boil the kettle while you are waiting put one level scope of ground coffee in the filter if you like it stronger use more

when the water boils for at least one minute (hotter water makes better coffee) pore a little water at a time in the filter about half left the filter up once and a while so not to over fill it

if you find the coffee bitter add a dash of salt

if you like flavored coffee for mocha add a table spoon of coco and you will need to sweeten it to taste and there is coffee made with milk instead of water

some like Cinnamon or nutmeg or vanilla

for a kick add Irish cream

and of course there is cream sugar non fat milk

coffee is as individual as the person drinking it

put a filter and however much coffee grounds you want in the 'top' basket and fill the 'top' with water. the outside of it, not where the grounds are. the water mixes with the grounds and coffee comes out to the 'bottom' or pot

it might be good if you have a coffee maker. then you just get a coffee filter and put it in there then put like 3 tablespoon size scoops of ground coffee beans in the filter. you put water in the spot where that goes then you turn it on.

sounds like you have some sort of percolator, coarse ground coffee works best for those, I find it is easier to use a simple contraption, a plastic thing that uses a number 2 cone filter.
