I so know your dilemma.
Mine is the same way and to make matters worse, it is very very course.
I get so damned pissed when people say ..well your hair wouldnt be that way if you didnt color it or use that daged flat iron on it.GRRRR!!!! LOL they know NOTHING!
here is what i do for to make mine have controled curl, its a mixture of products that are pretty cheap.
mouse
jel
light hairspray or scrunch spray
some sort or freeze control( i use freeze ease)
or both
shine spray
mix about a handful of mouse,3 tsps of jel 1 tsp freeze control into a bowl or a bottle.Apply to towel dried hair, then pull out your blow dryer, set it on low heat, blow dry hair in a downward position while lightly scrunching your hair. When hair is just about dry, spritz like a freak with the hair spray or scrunch spray and then lightly glaze it with the shine spray, continue to blow dry and scrunch until almost completely dry.Allow the rest of the drying to air dry.
To flat iron your hair, use a flat iron protected/heat protecter. And once you get it flat...curl the ends, this helps wwwweigh you hair down and hold it straight. Then spritz it...not the roots..but mainly the ends and middle with a shine spray.
Hope this helps and gl.:)

I have the exact same hair and it has been a battle my whole life. It's long (past my bra), thick, coarse, and of course curly. Herbal Essence make this shampoo and conditioner called totally twisted. It comes in a purple bottle, and smells great. Okay so here's the way to help. Shampoo your hair and rinse really well, like it will kinda feel nappy (best description I've got), and then condition as per normal. Put a quarter size on the roots, rub a quarter size on the tips, and finally a quarter size in the middle. Now run a brush through it from root to tip. This will help make sure theconditioner gets to every part of your hair. Now let the conditioner sit in your hair for a good five minutes. This is usually when I go ahead and wash the rest of me, and then I rinse evrything (body and hair). As soon as you get out flip your head upside down and run your fingers though your hair getting out any possible tangles then scrunch. There's a gel at Walmart by La bella that is for curly hair (its pink). Anywho scrunch it into your hair doing the underside first then flip your head back upright and scrunch the back. Make sure you focus on the hair at the crown of your head since it's the least curly because of how long and heavy your hair is. Go ahead and do the side and the front as well. Now towel scrunch your curls so that they're not dripping on you, and then spray it with hair spray again herbal essence makes good ones. Let it air dry for a natural look of bounciness.
For the days you want to straighten it then go with Herbal Essences Hello Hydation in a blue bottle. Go about the same shower routine only feel free to towel up your hair. It helps repair any damage from product use and helps with a nice clean look when its straight. Blow dry like normal, and the straighten.
I promise you'll get compliments....I always do.

You need a good conditioner.Try Nexxus. Its a little spendy but it keeps my hair in check.I have the same problem. You could also try putting a small amount of cond. in your hair after you get out of the shower, it will weight it down some so it doesn't fly all over.

I have the same problem! No one understands the bummer of having thick curly hair unless they have it. I condition mine really well and I put hairspray on it while its still wet. It defines the curls and makes it look better. Also Garnier soft curl creme is excellent if you want softer curls. Good luck!

i used to have REALLY curly hair, but it sorta straighted out as i got older, if you're still young then that could happen or try one of those hairbands that have long ribbons at the end they are used to control the fizz at the top and you can try to use a ponytail with it, its a little better with control than a regular hair scrunch if you know how to use it.

Use baby oil to condition and control frizz. Use a wide comb instead of a brush. Wear it with a loose bun or a loose braid.

WELL YOU SAY YOU HATE PUTTING IT IN A PONYTAIL. AND ITS UNRULY, YOU CAN GO TO A SALON AND LOOK AT ONE OF THEIR BOOKS ON STYLE AND HAVE ONE OF THOSE DONE, OR MAYBE A NEW HAIR STYLE ALL TOGETHER, YOU CAN ALWAYS HAVE YOUR HAIR CUT SHORT. AND STYLED SO WHERE YOU DON'T HAVE TO WEAR IT IN A PONY TAIL
