I'm going to assume you mean Boxing such as here in the US.
The competitions I view as more of a combat sport (kickboxing, UFC, K-1, etc). The training can be a martial science or martial art depending upon how and what the person uses it for. The instructor also has a bit to do with it as well. Just my thoughts.

Technically it is both, a martial art isn't always a fighting art though, but a fighting art is always a martial art. I would call it a sport though, it is very technical, but it is competition and points orientated. It has it's practical purposes, but it is mainly for sport and recreation, and i don't have a problem with that.

Fighting art/sport it involves competetive combat. I think of martial arts utilizing the entire body. By this logic Muay Thai is not a martial art either.

Boxing is a sport and now it is called a martial art. I don't really believe it should be qualified as a martial art though.

It's both.

One thing that ALL martial arts have is a way to overcome opponent by physical or handheld weapons force.

it is a sport AND a martial art

It's a sport, and one that is losing ground so fast it's gonna be gone thanks to MMA's such as K1 pride and UFC. No one (in america) wants to see an hour long chess match of who lands the post punches. MMA brings much more to the table. But that wasn't the question and is an entirely different discussion in it's own.
