The chemical make up of penicilling/antibiotics and codeine is very different. There is no known cross sensitivity between them. A person allergic to one may not be allergic to the other...unless he is very unlucky and allergic to both types of drugs! To put it simply, a person allergic to antibiotics should be able to take codeine....but just be wary as a person with drug allergies may be sensitive to other medications.

Your allergies are VERY important in choosing a pain killer...I am serverely allergic to Codiene. Neither of the two are related as codiene is a narcotic and pennicillin is a mold based antibiotic. Nevertheless...pay close attention to your symptoms when taking anything and report anything unusual to your doctor. A small problem can quickly turn catastrophic!!

No, one doesn't affect the other because they are different kinds of drugs. I am allergic to Penicillin and Sulfa, sensitive to the -mycins, and I can take Codeine just fine. Your allergies would be of importance in choosing other antibiotics, but not necessarily a pain killer. Just be sure you tell health care professionals about all your drug allergies, so they have the information and can be on the lookout for a problem.

Codeine and antibiotics are two different drugs. One is an anti bacterial med to stop and prevent infection, and the other, codeine is a narcotic pain med used to prevent or stop pain. Lots of people have reactions to both. Your health care professional is probably the best source for you allergy history. It is even possible to have a reaction even if there is no history of an allergy to the drug.

It is a rule in pharmacology that if two substances are similar in chemical formula they may produce allergy or hypersensitivity such as penicillin and other synthetic derivatives like amoxicillin, ampicilline, cephalexine and etc. that in these circumstances docotor prescribes, if necessary, an antibiotic from a chemical category other than pencillin such as tetracycline or erythromicine, but about codein there is no relationship with pencilline in sense of allergogenicity in terms of similarity of their chemical structures. But it is one point and it is that Codeine can release histamine from plasma cells in blood and other sites of the body like fixed hystiocytes in skin and mucosa. histamine is a mediator and promotor of allergy in body thus it may potentiate this type of hypersensivity. It is for the same reason that codein consumption may aggravate an asthmatic attack due to histamine release from hystiocytes placed in the respiratory tract mucosa.

I don't know but I'm allergic to both penicillin and codiene, so there could be a connection. You should ask a doctor.

Codeine is a Pain Reliever...Antibiotics fight infection, 2 totally separate categories of drugs...but, if you are sensitive to medication, you should still be cautious...Codeine is notorious for causing stomach upset....I would take the lowest recommended dose to begin with....good luck.
