Do you think it is acceptable to burp out loud, full force in public? It seemed to be an epidemic lately, a lack of good manners!

"Burp!"

You cover your mouth with your hand, but it's too late. The people at the next table in the lunchroom already heard. As you turn back to your soda, you think: Where did that burp come from?

A burp — sometimes called a belch — is nothing but gas. When you eat or drink, you don't just swallow food or liquid. You also swallow air at the same time. The air we breathe contains gases, like nitrogen and oxygen.

Sometimes when you swallow these gases, they need to get out. That's where burping comes in! Extra gas is forced out of the stomach, up through the esophagus, and out of the mouth as a burp.

Some kids find that drinking soda or other carbonated beverages makes them burp more. Can you guess why? If you're thinking that it's because these drinks contain extra gas, you're right! The gas that makes the drinks fizzy is carbon dioxide, another gas that can bring on big burps. Sometimes eating or drinking too fast can make a person burp because this can send extra air into the stomach. The same thing happens when you drink through a straw: extra air in = more burps out.

Burping is almost never anything to worry about. Everybody does it at least once in a while, and it's very unusual for burping to mean something is wrong in a kid's body. What can you do if you're around people and you feel a burp coming on?

It seems like the only people who can get away with really loud burps are little babies — their parents cheer when they burp because it means that the babies won't feel the extra gas in their stomachs and cry. But unless you're tiny and bald, it's probably a good idea to be polite when it's time to burp. Try to burp quietly and cover your mouth. Of course, whether your burp is loud or quiet, saying "excuse me" can't hurt either.

I could understand if you were drinking a soda pop and a small burp escaped. You would then say,"Excuse me". But no, releasing that long belch is never acceptable and very rude to those around you.Not only that, you'd make yourself appear as some uneducated boor with no manners.

No. It is not. In Western societies: No.
But somewhere in Far East it belongs to the
good manners, to BURP after a good meal. Honest.

Nam, Thailand (on the country side),
also in Singapore in Chinatown...

Well, i burp all the time.

i'm like the queen of burping, i only do it around family and REALLY close friends.

Depending on where i'm at... if i'm at school i could really care less. if im at a restaurant i would not even think about it. my parents are very strict when it comes to having good manners.

I think it terribly bad form. It would be much better manners to burp as silently as possible, and be excused for a mo, if in mixed company.
What a bunch of mates do (males) when it is only males in the group is one thing, but to be plain rude when in mixed company is another.

In most western cultures it is considered bad manners .

I think in some eastern cultures such as China to burp after a meal is considered to be a compliment to the host.

Generally no.

However I have read in times of old that it was a compliment to burp during and after a meal when in Japan, although this may no longer be acceptably polite today.

In the United States it's bad manners.

But...if you go to Italy, you could flatter your hosts if you burp after eating a meal at their house. My uncle was stationed there when he was in the military. From what he said, the people there not only like it when you burp at the table, they actually tend to expect it.

No it's not very polite. But around here, the louder you burp or fart in public, the more applause you get.

Young people are not taught manners today. We have become a nation of ill mannered people who can not even speak our own language correctly. If I hear one more person say "me and John are going.. It is "John and I are going..." We are just going to the dogs these days.
