My wife and I are thinking about a Goldendoodle for our next dog (little/no shedding, etc.) ANY and ALL feedback on this new breed is appreciated before we make this important decision. (We live near Orlando.)

Thanks very much.

The Goldendoodle is a loving, loyal dog and has a keen sense of smell. They can be taught to enjoy swimming, as both the retriever and Poodle elements of their heritage normally enjoy water. Goldendoodles are intelligent, friendly, and great with kids, just like their Golden Retriever and Standard Poodle parents. They are easily trained, highly social, and by nature are easy with strangers and other dogs. They love to play, and retain the strong retrieving instincts of the Golden Retriever.
To ensure the best health of your doodle you need to make sure the parent breeds are of optimum health. Standard poodles and golden retrievers share two detrimental traits: hip dysplasia and cataracts. Good breeders will certify their parent breeds free from hip dysplasia (orthopedic certification, typically at two years of age), and cataracts (ophthalmologic certification).
You can find out more and look for a local breeder at www.goldendoodles.com

Not a new breed, an expensive mutt.

There are no guarantees about any qualities a 'Doodle may have as they are essentially, mutts. (Breeds are breeds because they have traits that are reliably passed down from generation to generation.) Designer dogs are not actual breeds and any papers they have are not worth anything (as they are not recognized by the AKC). There are lots of breeds that don't shed (Poodles, Schnauzers, a few terriers, etc)

That being said, If you know what you want is a Doodle then good for you. Just go into it with your eyes open and realize that what your purchasing is essentially a mutt (which doesn't make it any less of a good dog)

Given that the Doodle you're talking about is a cross between a poodle and a golden retriever, I would imagine that they would be bright and friendly. But like I said, no guarantees (other than both Goldens and Poodles are bright and friendly). It may shed or it may not, Goldens shed, Poodles don't.

I would get a doodle that had a Golden and a Poodle as parents as opposed to 2 Doodles (I think that it would decrease the potential health problems as it would decrease the chance of getting an inbred pup). Follow all the usual precautions when choosing a breeder.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but I hope this helps

Goldendoodles are great dogs to have. They have their pros and cons; as all dogs have but their loyalty and your friendship between these dogs won't even compare to anything in the world. They can either have straight, wavy, or curly coats. The straightest usually come more from the golden retriever in the F1(direct golden and poodle cross)crosses while the f1b(goldendoodle and poodle) and the f2+ are generally curvier coated dogs. Goldendoodle come in different sizes like the standard and the miniature. If you're want a large dog, get a standard, if you want a smaller dog, get a mini. Both are great to have. Pricing for doodles are a bit heftier than other breeds. But that could just mean they have a better chance food coming from a good place(sometimes.) choose wisely when choosing your doodle. When you do choose, you won't regret it. These dogs are amazing. Perk, bouncy, energetic, friendly, loyal, lovable, family friendly, are all words to describe the goldendoodle.

A goldendoodle is nothing but a mix between a Golden Retreiver and a Poodle. They can be heavy shedders, light shedders, moderate shedders...despite claims by the irresponsible peopel who delibrately breed these mixes they aren't nonshedding (even Poodles shed to a degree) and they aren't hypoallergenic (no breed/mix realy is). They come in curly hair, wavy hair, straight hair, long hair, medium length hair..they are prone to hip dysplasia, eye problems, thyroid problems and some types of cancers (just like the breeds that were bred to make them).

Instead of a high priced mix people should look for a breed that is already here, already established, already recognized that offer all of the things that the designer mutt" people claim about the mixes...some good choices are Pudel Pointer, Portugese Water Dog, Irish Water Spaniel, Curly Coated Retreiver, Chesepeke Bay Retreiver, Flat Coat Retreiver...

It is not a new breed. It is a mutt. As far as no shedding, it can take after the Golden retriever and shed like crazy. People who breed them say they don't shed so they can sell the pups. Why would you pay so much money for a mutt?? No reputable breeder would mix 2 breeds together.

My sister has one.
"Sophie" is the sweetest dog. I have 3 nephews who are still small and Sophie is kind and gentle to them.
She has the personality of a Golden, but the body of the large poodle. She retrieves like a Golden, but prances like a poodle.
I have a Lab now whom I adore, but when she crosses the "Rainbow Bridge", I will get a Labradoodle or a Goldendoodle.

I hope that helped!

P.S. Every REPUTABLE breeder I know of (at least 5 in MO, NV and CA) requires the new owner to spay or neuter their new pet. It is unknown how the genes will cross down, so its the only responsible thing to do. The person below me that said to get a Golden and Poodle as parents should know that is how its done. If not, the breeder is out to make a buck, not breed nice dogs.

Considering the two breeds in this mix,the dog would have to be intelligent and easily trained, good with kids, and friendly. Not to say there won't be exceptions. However, there can be drawbacks to these types of dogs-co.ck-a-poos(stupid censor, lol) and the like. You have to be sure to get them from a reputable breeder and not a petstore, because petstores get their dogs almost solely from puppy mills, where no care as to the health of the parents or puppies is taken. The puppies could be prone to certain health defects, etc, like cataracts and hip dysplaysia, like someone else mentioned.Just do your research, and look carefully at puppies, and good luck!

there a good choice but if its a goldendoodle it could eather get as little as a poodle or as big as a retreaver so you might want to check to see about how big the one you want is going to get
