Since you have started a new job, but didn't know that this would happen, I think that you should go to the viewing because it is your mom's cousin and wondering if you even know him/her.

Plus, if your father and brother are going, your mother has them for support. It is really a hard call to make, but since you have responsibilities with work and it is your first day, you need to be accountable. Another wards, be there. You can also ask your mom if you need to be there for her.

On a second note if you feel like you will be hurting your mom's feelings just talk to her and tell her how you feel. Because if you do decide to go to the viewing, you will not make it in time anyway if you get off work early. Usually when there is a death in the family, you should let your job know as soon as you can. Sometimes employers are reasonable about things like this. You can either show up to work, then tell them about the death in the family....they might just tell you to go to the viewing. Just make sure you tell them how you were feeling about losing your job to this because of it being your first day. I am sure they will understand.

you really have a though decision to make. you can start by telling your parents that your first day of job falls on the same date as your aunt's viewing - if they still want you to go with them then second option is by sincerely telling your boss-to-be the real story...try to ask him if you can go - maybe he will understand.
But remember that your first day of work means a lot and will reflect on your attitude evaluation - first impression last as they say.

Alot of managers are very understanding when it comes to such a personal family issue. My cousin got murdered in 1999.I just started this job and i had to make the same desicion.I chose to see my cousin one last time before i would never see him again.Yes they fired me but theres plenty of other jobs out there and i found a new one right away. Were you close to this relative?I would say if you werent that close and barely seen eachother then you should go to work. But if this was someone dear to you then.......jobs come and go...you have to pay yoour respects to your family memeber.

Work is important maybe u could ask if u can leave early but that doesnt go down well just explain them the situation they can only say no.

I would call my work and explain the situation to them. Let them know that you would really like to attend if it's possible. Couldn't hurt to ask!

Sorry for your loss. I think I'd have to go to work though or you won't have a job.
