Generally a sealed box will give you more of a punch if your looking at off the shelf stuff. down side is it takes more power to get as loud as a ported. down side to a ported bigger box and easier to blow a speaker. (more freedom of movement) If you are willing to spend the money talk to a few good custom builders. The porting of a box is very detailed to tune it to your needs and musical desires. I have a sealed box now, but after talking to my stereo guy, and seeing how crisp a well built ported can sound. I think im going to have him do up a custom ported when im ready to change. Dont just go in and say sure to the first guy that yaps at you. remember they get paid if you buy from them. look around and yap with several different people. The guys i went with for my system were the first ones i talked to but i spent another month looking around and checking back with them to talk about what i wanted. Find the guy/gal that will chat with you about everything give you the info and tell you call them if you got questions. Not the guy that starts out by ripping the place across town and telling you how many w-6's he can stuff into your trunk.

A ported box is much better. It can make the sub beat twice as hard. A ported box controls the air flow of the sub. You will need a custom box for your subs though when the power get higher.

Ported with 10's will get the best punch. Smaller woofers react quicker than the larger ones and are more punchy.

Ported gives more of a "feel" in the area! It also allows the cone to travel farther for a deeper bass. But... not all speakers are equal! You still need to listen to each one using the same amp and song, (or recording), to see which one "YOU" like the best! I like those in the 10" range best for the solid "thump".

Your question is more about sound quality than sound volume. Generally speaking a sealed box will produce clearer, tighter, "punchier" bass but the drawback is it will require more power as you increase the volume. For a larger room, a ported box becomes more necessary as it can produce higher volume with less power. The "rumble" of which you ask is generally how low in the audio spectrum you can go - sub-30Hz bass is felt more than heard - and a ported box can generally produce lower in the spectrum (hence their popularity in home theater). For critical music listening, a sealed box than can produce down to 30Hz is generally going to sound better than a ported box; for home theater sound effects, especially in a larger room, a ported box is generally better but placement in the room is critical for bass clarity.
