Why doesn't ESPN HD broadcast in true 5.1 surround sound?

The format is Dolby 5.1, but the sound is mostly on the center channel and the volume is weak compared to ABC HD.

Like you said, they do broadcast in 5.1. So theoretically they could have the same sound as ABC, but it just depends on how the audio engineers want to mix each particular program.

Well while you are watching ESPN people are talking, right?? So why should the sound come from behind you??

People are talking, on screen so the sound comes from the center. easy huh?
