If you watch the early UFC fights this is exactly what they tried to prove, what style/discipline/type of fighting was the best. Watch the first 10 UFC's.

First lets assume that that the karate guy and the boxer are of the same build. Next lets have the boxer fight the karate guy, since I rather fight the loser of the two.
As a fighter the three most important things in your attacks are speed, power, and striking distance.
Biologically speaking your legs have more power then your arms. People can usually leg press a lot more weight then they can bench press for example. Also your legs are usually a lot longer then your arms.
So power and striking distance are favored for the Karate fighter,
However, the when it comes to speed the hand can generally strike its target faster then the leg can. Since the range of motion is shorter and more direct.
So if the boxer can get in close I think he could do more damage. But if the karate guy is any good he should be able to prevent the boxer from getting in close enough. Plus a quick kick to the knee will cause almost anybody to buckle.

The boxer will. Tell you why. The boxer is not only trained to throw punches, he's also trained to take them. All this bullshit about using kicks and pressure points, we're not talking about a choregraphed Jean-Claude movie fight. I've was involved in Karate for many years and attended many tournaments. I even managed to win a few, and I never saw any sudent of any martial arts fight like what is seen in those vamped-up movies. I would never even consider going into a ring witha professional boxer.
Ever watch ultimate fighting championship fights? How many karate fighters do you see win by applying pressure point tactics? They all end up rolling around on the mat trying to jockey for position to pummel each other. Maybe one might land a lucky kick once in a while. Better question yet, why is it you never see a professional licensed boxer in these fights (to my knowledge anyways)? All the martial arts experts are just hometown toughguys that have been taught a few moves. Not to say they're not talented, but there not trained the same way a boxer is. Can you imagine Ken Shamrock vs Mike Tyson in their prime? No contest.
It is a well known fact in the martial arts world that karate expert Bruce Lee NEVER participated in a tournament or professional contest in his life. Yet he is considered to be one of the greatest fighters in the world?
Karate at best can be considered a tactical means of self defense to increase your chances of warding off an attacker. It was never designed to be used a fighting method.

Boxing is streets, Karate is (family get togethers) Boxer would destroy a karate fighter with ease... Boxers fight by angles, he keeps his opponent off balance as he's placing an attack... What makes boxers is there footwork not use of hands.. They are extremely accurate in hand -2- hand combat... They are the masters of the most potent decisive tool that factors in fights which is the (Jab) If there was a world wide tournament of boxers vs. karates... Karate business would plummet drastically.. ppl will end up going to karate strictly for fitness purpose instead of fighting when they figure out that Boxers are from the streets and they deal with street drama and want to hone there skills... Karate is wesconsin white family driving too there dojo in a mini-van saying C'mon kids lets learn how to do our spinning back heel kick.. LoL.. You guys are internet dweebs to think throwing a kick won't get you beat down within seconds... You throw a kick and you just cutt your balance in HALF! trying to do movie script moves will get you DESTROYED in an adrenaline rush of what might and could be YOUR LIFE ... fighting on the streets or in nightclubs comes from 2 men bumpin the wrong way and now it's on like dinner at a movie... A karate fighter won't get a chance to re-act his choreographic moves on a 19year old lean athletic boxer known for jogging 5miles a day.. and speed roping 6 3minute rounds.. and circling 750pound bags... not to mention they sparr aggressively... karate goes by points.. boxing goes by survival in the ring... YOUR ******* KIDDING ME STOP WATCHING KARATE KID AND THINKN YOU CAN WAX ON WAX OFF A FIGHT IN REAL LIFE FOOLS!

Wrong choice. Bruce Lee was never defeated. He would have had any boxer defeated in short order.
Boxing is about punching with gloves, Karate is mostly kicking, but Kung Fu, what Bruce lee practiced, is the most potent fighting form which utilizes pressure points, and one form of Kung Fu, called Dim Mak, is known as death touch fighting, and can permanently disable or kill a person on the receiving end by attacking their pressure points.
Chin Na, which is another Kung Fu discipline, is the art of seizing and controlling and joint locking and Tai Chi, is one of the oldest and most advanced forms of Kung Fu fighting. The old Kung Fu TV series, with David Caridine, David practices Tai Chi, and it is a very potent fighting form. It is also excellent for developing Chi which develops energy and health in a person
Stephen Segal practices Aikido, which is a combination of Chin Na, and Tai Chi, and what you see in the movies is the real deal, as Stephen is a highly advanced and effective fighter.
Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris went one on one and Bruce kicked Chucks a s s into the next time zone. Chuck practices Tai Kwon Do, which is Korean Karate, and is very common in America, and is mostly about show and point fighting.
A person learning Karate for street defense, is making a big mistake, as a well trained Kung Fu or a seasoned street fighter, will clean their clock in a heartbeat.
In closing, I do not know of any Special Forces units that use boxing or spin kicking, or Gracie wrestling in their CQB (Close Quarter Battle). Almost all of it is based on the basic moves of Kung Fu, and use of body weapons in life and death hand to hand combat.
I notice several of the answers on this question do not even have a clue as to what they are talking about.

I'll give you two examples from my youth.
1
Two hotdog salesmen got into a fight outside the football ground, one was a black belt in karate and in kung fu the other was a 9 stone weed.
Weed won easily, he got the first kick in the goolies and when the guy went down he made sure he did not get up again.
2
A bloke twice my size came at me outside a pub, I could not reach his face he was so much taller than me but i got him with a good un to his kidneys, enraged he came back again this time trying them fancy kicks where they spin round. I took a step back each time grabbed his ankle lifted it up ,stepped in and kicked him to the goolies. Four times that happened before he gave up and just walked away rubbing himself.
So my answer is boxer no, karate guy no. Footballer every time :)

Bad choice. Karate and other martial arts are well versed in chin-na, which is self defense using pressure points. They can quickly disable an opponant in a painful manner, THEN apply kicks, punches, whatever. martial arts is more about movie style kicks.
As a martial artist, I would take the boxer any day over another marital artist.

Definatly a karate guy, because karate is all about the mental and you have to actually use your brain to win, boxing is more about who can hit the hardest and weaken his opponent physically.
