I have gotten a tremendous amount of information from ancestory.com and familysearch.com. Familysearch is especially good for census information.

If you know the general area that your family has lived in the past...
1. Try local Court House, they have plenty of records on file, that you can go through..Deeds, marriages, deaths, etc.
2. Local libraries may have listings in historical files on local families.
3. Familytree.com can get you started, might be able to get some information for free.

There are Genealogy sites online that may help you get started also. Good luck, once you get started and you become successful with your family genealogy, it becomes addicting, so look out. It is really cool... what kind of information you can get.

Good luck

You could try something like myheritage.com. I know they have some free stuff but I'm not sure how effective it'll be in that regard.
