Is there a downloadable software that can convert conventional stereo sound into Dolby 5.1 surround sound (DTS)?

I dont think there is a software that can convert conventional stereo to 5.1 surronud sound because surround sound should come from the original recording itself which should be done inside the recording studios where they do the per channel separation of sound

No. This is impossible and the closest thing you will find is Pro Logic II. Once a signal has been mixed, it can't be un-mixed. Imagine taking cake batter and trying to seperate the eggs from it.
5.1 provides 5 individual, discrete, seperate channels of sound while stereo provides only 2 channels. The remaining channels can't be un-mixed from a stereo signal.

Windows Media Player includes SRS WOW to enhance 20ch audio..
Most TVs and AVRs include "Virtual Surround" engines as well.
They take a 2-ch stereo signal and try to create a virtual surround signal. If you sit in the correct spot, it is actually pretty realistic. They use psycoacoustic theory to fake it.
You may find s/w, but I really doubt it. Audio DSP companies make money out of this technology and they keep their secrets quite tight. In any case, search for "virtual surround".
