The setting for the Book of Ruth begins in the heathen country of Moab, a region northeast of the Dead Sea, but then moves to Bethlehem. This true account takes place during the dismal days of failure and rebellion of the Israelites, called the period of the Judges. A famine forces Elimelech and his wife Naomi from their Israelite home to the country of Moab. Elimelech dies and Naomi is left with her 2 sons, who soon marry 2 Moabite girls, Orpah and Ruth. Later both of the sons die, and Naomi is left alone with Orpah and Ruth in a strange land. Orpah returns to her parents, but Ruth determines to stay with Naomi as they journey to Bethlehem. This story of love and devotion tells of Ruth's eventual marriage to a wealthy man named Boaz, by whom she bears a son, Obed, who becomes the grandfather of David and the ancestor of Jesus. Obedience brings Ruth into the privileged lineage of Christ.

I just did a devotion on Ruth. I believe that Ruth was a very open minded woman. She came from a country which didn't worship God, but instead of being closed to the possibilities of the one true God she opened her heart to Him. I believe that God show himself through her mother-in-law Naomi. Naomi obviously had strong faith in God and this had to be obvious to Ruth. I wish all non-Christians could be more like Ruth.

The Hebrew Bible Book of Ruth tells the story of Ruth, a young widow from Moab (east of the Dead Sea), and her devotion to her mother-in-law, Naomi. When Naomi, also a widow, decided to return to Judah, her homeland, Ruth went with her. Although the move would make Ruth a stranger in a strange land, she chose to be loyal to Naomi, saying, “Wherever you go, I will go…your people shall be my people, and your God, my God.”

In Judah, Ruth and Naomi settled in the town of Bethlehem. There Ruth married Boaz, a relative of Naomi; their great-grandson, David, became the king of Israel. The Book of Ruth is said to have been written by the prophet Samuel.

An Israelite woman named Naomi moved from Bethlehem to Moab east of the Jordan to escape a famine. There her two sons marry Moabite women. When Naomi's husband and sons die she decides to return to Bethlehem. One of her daughters-in-law remains in Moab, but the other, whose name is Ruth, insists on staying with Naomi. The women arrive in Bethlehem during the grain harvest. Ruth works in the fields of a man named Boaz, who is a distant relative of Naomi. Boaz instructs his workers to treat Ruth kindly and Naomi has Ruth meet Boaz at the threshing floor one night. Boaz arranges to marry Ruth. Their great-grandson is David, king of Israel.

A Moabitess who married Mahlon after the death of his father Elimelech and while Mahlon, his mother Naomi, and his brother Chilion were living in Moab. A famine had caused the family to leave their native Bethlehem in Judah. Ruth’s brother-in-law Chilion was married to the Moabitess Orpah. Ruth became known for loyalty to her mother-in-law and to the God of her husbands family, whom she came to love and worship. Given the opportunity to marry Boaz, a relative of her late husbands, she accepted rather than go after younger men. This she did for spiritual reasons and was blessed to become an ancestress of Jesus Christ.
