because global warming is due largely to our use of oil and fossil fuels but the oil companies are big players in our economy and government; they won't sacrifice themselves to turn the country over to alternative energy sources.

First of all, global warming is not EXCLUSIVELY caused by human civilization. We are probably accelerating it, and contributing to it, but it's going to happen no matter what we do with the technology at hand. What all the Bush-bashers don't bother mentioning is that the climatic record of Earth going back millions of years shows cycles of global warming/cooling long before we ever came along.
Secondly, all those clamoring that the government "do something" never come up with exactly what can be done to offset the natural phenomenon. Even the highly-touted Kyota Protocols to which several nations subscribe has yet to develop a single set of solutions.
Finally, the US government can't dictate to other nations what they must do to alleviate global warming, Brazil and the ongoing destruction of their rain forests being just one example. Red China's total disregard for the environment is another. We can't do it alone, even if there was something we could do.

No government will take drastic action until some drastic consequences happen. Even then, they won't, because they would be giving an advantage to whatever other governments do not take action. If the U.S were to be the good guy and ban cars or something, all that would happen is that North Korea or someone would use all the oil we don't to make themselves powerful and build a bunch of tanks and SUVs.
It is the same reason we do not have world peace. Anyone who will not fight is simply killed by the bully nations of the world, so that only fighters survive.
So our only hope is new technology that generates power without emitting green house gasses. And that technology will be invented, and is being invented in, the U.S. because freedom promotes invention.

There is no real proof that the environment is not just going through the normal cycles that it has been for millions of years. Remember there were several ice ages and between them there was "global warming" with no human interferance, and the warming stopped and and cycled back to an ice age. If you want to spend $25,000 on a 2 seat car go ahead, I will keep driving the vehicle that I can AFFORD, some of us cannot buy new cars every year.

People, stop repeating there is no real proof that global warming is man made. Proof we will never get, but an extremely strong correlation we DO have and that is all we will ever get. Next we have computerised models who predict the consequences of not acting now and these are dire. Of course there was previous warmer period, but the changes took place of thousands of year allowing for species to adapt. Already the polar bear, and pretty much of all the artic animal population are in danger. Already Louisiana got hit by a major disaster. What will it take for you to pull your head outta your a** and buy smaller car, insulate your homes and walk or bike to work?
And please don't whine that "the US can't do it alone". The US bailed out of Kyoto which is backed by pretty much the whole world. The whole world is doing it without the US is a truer statement. The US is acting like a retarded nation if you ask me (just look at the president) and the question asked here is perfectly valid.

Number one global warming isn't 100 percent proven yet...number two global warming isn't trying to suicide bomb our asses...Bush has nothing to do with global warming and he personally can't really do anything about it...Not by himself...but if you have any true suggestions or proof that it can actually be taken care of, the world is listening...let hear it! It easy to point a finger but fixing it is another story.

Simply because they don't want to cost jobs for something they are no absolutely sure about.
I'm sure you would understand if you were to work in one of these industries. I believe there was a similar argument over how we should limit the industry over Earth climate in the 1970s, which seemed like Earth was getting colder.
Some say this is one of Earth's cycles. GW has yet got to be proven

How can "they" do more than YOU? If the government gets involved it will only mean REGULATION, RESTRICTION, and CONTROLS on guess who--YOU, and every other American citizen. Thus, you can do your part just as well without regulation than you can with regulation.
If you mean things like why doesn't the government purchase alternative fuel vehicles for the government fleet--yes, I agree, they can and should. This would lower the cost so that average Americans could afford these cars.

Because there is no such thing as man-made global warming, and there's nothing you can do about natural global warming except crank up the A/C.

ah - the real question of global warming
in 1800 - 900 million people in this world
in 1900 - 1.6 billion people
in 2000 - 6 billion people
in 2005 - 8.5 billion people
Sorry - government doesn't have a magic wand for this problem
And what will we do (thanks to immigration) when America becomes 51% muslim - we will be outvoted -
global warming will be the least of our worries
