I need to know the answer to this question before I go buy or adopt one. I am very big PETA person, and have heard some bad stuff about how they are bred. I need to know what happens.

Many times runts are bred to runts. Theses dogs do not conform to the breed standards set by the AKC. These standards are set to bring out the best in the breeds, but those who try to breed smaller and smaller dogs, are just causing damage to the dogs and the breed!

First of all, there is no such thing as a "teacup" in any breed. People who call their chihuahua/yorkie/pom etc a "teacup" are merely trying to charge extra money. Moreover, many of the "teacups" advertised for these breeds are actually the correct size, but many people do not realize this. An example would be the chihuahua. To be correct according to the AKC standard, the chihuahua must weigh less than 6 lbs and there is no minimum weight. These "teacups" are just toy dogs on the smaller end of the normal range.

Another aspect to keep in mind is that when you have very small dogs (2 1/2-3 lbs or less), they are more fragile and generally do not have as long of a lifespan as their larger counterparts. With the toy breeds, 1/2 lb makes a big difference.

Third, anyone who is selling "teacups" is not an ethical or reputable breeder. Reputable breeders are interested breeding healthy, quality dogs. They are doing the necessary health testing before breeding; they are also interested in meeting you and your entire family. In addtion, when these smaller than perferred puppies do occur, they are extremely picky about the type of home they go into.

Now if you want to see some disturbing breeding practices, check out Japan. The puppymillers in that country are deliberately breeding recessive, rare colors etc in different breeds to the point where severly mutated puppies are regularly part of litters (i.e. puppies without feet, noses, born blind or deaf etc).

Last of all, if you are a big PETA person than technically you would not want to own a dog. PETA believes that dogs should all be allowed to run free etc. PETA will go to unethical lengths to accomplish its goals (something you will not find in the literature or on their website).

I'm a huge supporter of animals rights, but cannot support that organization..you're better off funding your local shelter...sorry that's my PETA rant.

There is no such thing as a teacup puppy. Which is why you've heard bad things about them. People do breed for smaller puppies and these babies often have liver, heart, and kidney problems related to their size. Whatever breed your interested in, check the breed standard on the AKC.org website and see what size they are supposed to be. Often times you'll see "teacup" Chihuahua's that are six pounds (that's the MAX weight they should be). If a breeder says they have teacups, STAY AWAY because they don't know what they're talking about and they will rip you off.

well in the first place there is no such thing as teacup anything . It is just a term used by unscrupulous breeder to get more money out of unsuspecting folks such as yourself . They are just really small dogs that will most likely cost you a bundle in vet bills as some of them are known to have very costly genetic problems bred into them . They come about by byb breeding one runt to another . good luck and I hope I helped.

Dogs that are smaller then the breed standard are bred together in order to try to get a dog as small if not smaller then the parents. This is very unhealthy. It can give rise to some very, very serious health problems...liver, heart, kidney, skelatal, etc.

They are just bred from small teacup dogs. One male one female the normal way. There is no special program.

They take the runts or smallest of the breed until they get the size that they want.
