anything that can resist the moment on it caused by the lateral forces of the earthquake. For simple structures, Ive heard good things about geodomes. We design steel structures for seismic around here...who knows when the New madrid fault will sound off...

Triangles are suitable, bar none... RB Fuller's tetrahedron structures and the octet truss are applicable for this function, the stresses would be carried via the full shape and thereby minimized, purely isolate the beginning place from the earth and construct a geodesic dome over it.
