They are two different rings.
There is the engagement ring, which is the ring you propose to her with. It is a diamond in the US, but in other countries its usually another gem stone, so make sure you ask your mom what stone is appropriate for the country you live in. She will wear this ring throughout your engagement.
You wedding ring is generally a plain band of gold/platinum that you both will wear. They will be matching bands (unless you get something fancier for her) and you both exchange them on your wedding day during the ceremony. You will only wear your wedding band, she will wear both the engagement ring and band.
Good luck!!!

Yeah I had this conversation too with a couple of people. As it turns out the woman has a choice. The engagement ring is only that, but the wedding ring is typically a less pronounced ring that sits next to the engagement ring on the ladies finger. It typically matches the contours of the engagement ring and makes a good set.
Now the girl can also choose to wear a seperate wedding ring on the other hand, this one can be a close match to the guys wedding ring.
There aren't any rules for it, its really up to the couple.

Usually the engagement ring is given as a betrothel ring; that interim until you take the marriage vow. Then you exchange wedding rings as a seal upon the vows spoken.
But some couples bypass the engagement ring & wear only a wedding ring after being married.
And in some countries, the wedding ring is used for both the engagement & the wedding.

An engagement is the ring you provide as a token of your intentions to marry when you become betrothed. However you do not have to give an engagement ring during a proposal.
A wedding ring is the ring used during the exchange of rings during your wedding ceremony as a sign of your commitment to marriage.
There are several options a couple can choose from:
-purchasing any style of ring or band to use during a ring cermony when an engagement ring is not given
-using the engagement ring also as the wedding ring during the ring ceremony (and not purchase an additional wedding band)
-purchasing a wedding band to use during a ring ceremony to compliment an engagement ring given when you became betrothed.

They are two different rings. You give her the engagement ring when you propose, or shortly after. You and her will exchange wedding rings, which you will buy for each other, at the ceremony.

traditionally, there are two. the wedding band and the engagement ring. two rings. of course, there can be an agreement between between the two of you of whether or not she wants one big ring... or not. i know some guys who buy one really big ring, (since the chic is quite demanding), and doesn't get her a wedding band until another milestone in their life (i.e. a baby). but traditionally, there should be 2 rings.
