Thanks so far for the input...it kinda sounds like a belt maybe but they are good...it also has a rough idle at time whether not matter what the weather conditions are...its definetly coming from the engine compartment though...it a mix between a rattle and bb's in a can....

I can't remember if this is a over head valve or the single overhead cam version.

Step one is to make sure you are using the right weight of oil... All non-performance gasoline fired Ford's except the 4.0v-6s take 5w20.. The 4.0 is a weird one and still take 5w30 oil at least... not using the right weight can sometimes slow oil going to the chain guides and cause a rattle like sound.

Some 4.0s had issues with the camshaft timing chains and their tensioners not getting enough oil and possibly causing the noise you describe.

As the others said, bring it to the Ford dealer as trying to diagnose a noise over the computer is hard.

Well with out more information it is a little hard to say. It can be the heat shield on the cat is loose and rattling, could be something loose and making noise. It is hard to say. Where is the sound comming from the frount, the side, the underside, . We will help but need more information.

It could be the tensioners on the overhead cams, or detonation, or cats :(

Mine's been doing it for the last 35k, especially on startup, I think it's the tensioners
