visited petsmart today. I like to look at the different birds. but i have never wanted to buy from them. However, today there was this quaker parrot that was just too sweet. he was in a glass flight cage with small air vents. I talked into the air vent and it came running up to the air vent looking and smiling and trying to get out lol. I went to the other side of the cage, and called it and it trotted over to the other side. I have fallen in love with this bird!!! but, i left it there. i don't want to make any split decisions. What are the quirks and qualities of these birds? I've heard that they are loud...but that wouldn't bother me. Also, I have a cockatiel. would they get along? do quakers like scritches and lovin and TONS of attention? My cockatiel is with me all day long lol. she is never in her cage and rarely not on my shoulder. will a quaker like to do the same? my tiel goes everywhere with me when its not cold too!

They are the greatest pets. Yes, they can be loud, however. I think that Cockatiels are the best pets, overall, but the Quakies have a couple of things going for them. First, they are less shy or timid and more outgoing than the cockatiels, and second, I think they make better talkers. I'm sure there are people who would not agree, but that's my experience with them. I think they are more entertaining than cockatiels also. They are quite the clowns, especially if you give them "stuff". Toys, kleenex boxes, paper sacks, branches, popsicle sticks! Etc.......

I would not think it a good idea to let it out with your Cockatiel. Then again, as long as you supervise you could see for yourself what type of interaction takes place. This is the age old problem of owning more than one bird. just make sure that you are willing to dedicate the time to take proper care of it. Sounds to me like you are already being quite responsible by not giving in to an impulse buy, so I'm sure you will make the right decision!

Also, they are really healthy guys, not flighty or sickly or prone to disease or ailments....

Good Luck!

I own a quaker. It is adorable. Very loving sweet bird. My other 3 parrots are medium sized parrots so I have to keep a close eye on him when he is out of cage. Don't put them in same cage but should be fine in different cages. I never desired owning a small parrot until I saw a man that had one in pet store that was 12 years old. This little quaker was a clown. It would tell him "I'm hungry" "I like cornbread" when his owner told him " I don't have any cornbread but I have some french fries. What do you want?" The little quaker named Willy said " French fries" He was so adorable. Then Willy would sing "boogie woogie woogie get down willy get down" LOL and dance. He would roll over and play like he had been shot and say "oh no he got me!" and fall over. I had to have a quaker to add to my family that day. :)) LOL My hubby said no at first because we already had 3 parrots. But by the end of the day I was taking home a quaker. LOL. Never will regret it either :D

They are great birds, I've had mine for 5 years now. They are sweet. It sounds like you already know how to handle a bird. So I think you should go for it. That's what I did 7 years ago when I went to a pet store and a green cheeked conure was acting like a little clown amongst all the other birds. I brought him and all the accessories home with me. That was the first time I owned a bird. I think it was fate you were looking at them, go for it. Good luck!

I kept cockatiels and quakers at the same time. It was a bad idea. The quakers were really loud and had the weird ability to shoot their droppings from their cage to the wall six feet away. They bit some of the toes off of my cockatiel when he landed on their cage. My ancient, blind siamese cat was sniffing their cage and they bit him on the nose bad enough that he had to have stitches. They bit my baby sister and after that she was so scared of them that if she came into the room and they were out, she'd fall down on the floor. Maybe the two I had were just not good birds...they were both females, if that matters, but I have never been so happy to see a pet go as when I got rid of them.

I have one, and I love him!! Yes they can be loud sometimes, but like all new pets you'll usually have to train them. No, don't put tiel and the quaker parrot together, they may fight. But near eachother they would be ok. Quaker parrots can talk too, they can be really fun! It takes time to, but if you talk to them every now and then they will pick up on things. lol. So, oh and yeah they can live up to 40 or 45 years, given the proper treatment :)
Good luck;)

They are the sweetest birds! We have one at school that a woman donated because she had to for her living arrangements, and the bird is so cute! She chirps, talks a little, loves snuggling, and has excellent manners. She also bonds with mostly one person, however, like most birds. If you will be the primary handler/caretaker though, that shouldn't be a problem.
