I am 22 years old and I have settled at 6'4" (have not grown since age 19). My mother is 5'6", my father is 5'10" and my sister is 5'5". Growing up I ate a lot and was overweight quite a bit. I drank lots and lots of skim milk. Naturally, therefore, I attribute my current height to my diet. However, I have read on here that one's height is determined by his or her genes. So which one is it? - DIET or GENES?

Mainly genes from what I heard, but I'm in a similar situation, too. I'm 24, 5'9" and I come from a short family. My dad's about 5'5" and mum's just a little over 5'. I don't know about you, but I used to play a lot of hockey and basketball, as well as running track and field during my puberty and teenage years, so that's where I grew the most. And I did have a metabolism like yours too. Something for you to compare with.

Predominantly genes. However, an inadequate diet will limit the expression of the genes. In other words, if you don't have enough nutrients, you will not grow to a height that would be a typical expression of your genes. Your height for you family's history is atypical, but I imagine you could find other examples.

Nothing is determined by genes, they only give tendencies. I had a girlfriend who did a deep clease and had her eyes change from brown to blue. What you eat will cretainly affect how your genes get activated.

Combination of genes and diet. If you're well nourished, you have more potential for growth. Genes determine your possible height, diet determines how close you reach it.

Both.

There will be a maximum height based on genes and hormone function. But, if you do not get enough nutrition, then you will not reach that maximum height (if everything else is functioning normally).

Height is more than 80% heritable.

So, genes!

Definitely genes. In your case, you take after your father and possibly a tall grandparent.

My brother is practically 6 feet tall. My grandfather (mom's father) was 6'2". My father was 5'6" and my mom is 5'51/2".
