The rule of thumb for water is take your body weight in lbs., divide it by 2 and that is the number of ounces of water you should drink a day to be hydrated. So if you weigh 150 lbs, you should drink 75 oz of water each day, plus match ounce for ounce any alcohol you drink - if you have 4 oz of wine you need to have an extra 4 oz of water too.
Having said that, they say it is not particularly healthy to drink water with meals because it can dillute the digestive enzymes needed to break down that food.
Having said that - I would wonder if it is kidneys or the adrenal glands that sit on top of the kidneys. I would try to rub some olive oil on the back, just under the ribs and see if that helps at all. The essential fatty acids in the olive oil might be very soothing.
Funny, my little blue book of emotional causes says kidney problems is caused by criticism, shame and reacting like a little kid. Your mention of her mother criticizing her makes this interesting, don't you think? If you two feel that is accurate, she might try to remind herself again and again that it is safe to grow up and only good comes from each experience. Thoughts become things, so pick the good ones - because the bad ones make us sick.
Peace!

It is possible to drink too much water. It's called "water intoxication", in which the body's electrolytes are no longer in balance because there's too much water in the system.
A woman in California recently died because she drank a ridiculous amount of water to win a Nintendo Wii for a radio contest. Marathon runners are also sometimes susceptible to this as well, as they drink in preparation of a race or duing the race.
The whole 8 glasses a water a day is a myth. Drinking water only when you need to to stay properly hydrated. If your gf drinks say Gatorade or somehow balances out her water drinking because she's exercising heavily or is somehow otherwise losing fluids (illness, etc.) then she's probably okay.

Just today on the national news, a women died in California from ingesting too much water in some stupid contest !Yes there is a danger for anyone drinking too much water,it's called "Water Intoxication" the heart and lungs can't handle the fluid over-load and you actually die from drowning. Any fluid taken into the body in excess can cause this, the "key word" is excess. Remember this and tell you're friends, and you might help save a life ! Take care. SW RNP

It is possible to die from drinking too much water. I don't exactly remember the science behind it, but I think it has something to do with diluting the electrolytes. This is usually a problem for professional athletes, though, because they drink a LOT of water.

Haven't you heard about the women that died from water intoxication after a radio station contest?
Water intox is diff cult to treat and seriously deadly.
8-10 glasses of water a day is recommended. That works out to about a half a cup every half hour.
Tell her to at least add a few grains of salt to her water to help maintain her electrolyte balance.
If the pain persists, she must see a doctor.

It is possible to have TOO much, but it's unlikely you would get to that point in a single day.
