Does anyone else encounter this? And if you do, how do you clean the brush/prevent build-up?

depends on what type a brush...a paddle brush just use a comb to pick it out and wash it...with a boar bristles apply a knee high over the brush and press it down where the bristles come through the knee high, when it is time to clean the brush pull the knee high off and all the hair and lint left in the brush will come off

you cant really prevent it...because no matter how nasty it is...its from your hair.
take a large tooth comb and sitck it in the bottom of the bristiles in your brush and pull up.
i do it all the time and it works really well.
