In your remote there is infra red transmitter you can see it but you wont be able to see the light coming out from it your eyes can't see it, if you have a digital camera or cell phone with camera, you can see the light through your camera, just point your remote to the camera lens and see. when its light means it transmit certain frequency that later on will be pick up by infra red receiver inside the unit.
