Someone told me if you cut some hair off your cat's taill and scatter the hair around the entry way (outside porch etc,) if he ever got out he would ALWAYS find his way home. How true is this?
No I'm not blonde.

Well... that seems silly. BUT, if it were true, I would imagine that the answer would be in cats dander and their keen sense of smell.

They would be able to smell their way back because they lick themselves, leaving their scent on their fur.

Still, this is stretched beyond imagine and I really doubt it's true.

You can be sure your cat will never get lost and ALWAYS find it's way home one very simple way. Don't let it out! He/She will live a longer life that way, too.

And I AM blonde, btw. :)

It could very well be effective though if the hair had been there for any length of time it might have lost its smell.

If a cat gets out I would try it. Also I have heard putting their litterbox outside, some of your worn clothing with your scent on it and even walking around the perimeter of your property bare-foot!
A cat will find its way home by smell and not by sight.

That's why it's a good idea to halter and leash train your cat and walk it around your property. I was told that by the animal expert at the humane society many years ago. She said they would know the smell of every neighborhood dog, raccoon, opposum, deer etc. living in your area. Every animal has its own individual scent and cats are highly scent-oriented.

This is an old Irish tale (pardon the pun). I've no idea how it started or what part of Ireland it came from, but people would keep a little trim of fur off their cat's tail incase it wondered away. That night they would sprinkle the fur infront of the door and the cat would (or should) be waiting there at the door for them come the morning.
My experience with cats in Ireland is that the only reason they wait near the door is that's where the milkman comes first thing in the morning.
No idea if there is any "truth" to this "legand" or not. I'd leave kitty's tail alone though. --Andy

not true at all. first of all do not cut your cat's hair.
you need to keep your cat in the house, and you will not have to worry about him finding his way home.
