I don't.

You don't work on long distance relationships. Long distances work on you. Don't do it. Long distance relationships are doomed to failure.

I was in a long distance relationship with my bf for 1 and a half years and after that now we are happily married for 2 years! :)
I live in AZ and he was in MN before moving with me after graduation... whoa I'm glad those days are over!

I think that the most important things are patience and trust because you cannot really be with the person you love at the same time so you have to trust them. Finding nice deal on your long distance calls is no problem nowadays, but dealing with the problems that might arise is harder when you try from a long distance on each side of the line.

Be on the same page with each other by communicating expectations, and be prepared for any changes and expect that things are harder to control when you can't be there in person and this might cause you to argue. The more you try to understand the more likely your relationship will remain happy and healthy. **We used to fight a lot because we assumed that talking less on the phone meant that we didn't love each other when it actually was because we where busy but at different time zones and I wanted him to be waiting at the phone when I was free and the same goes to him... took a while to adjust to time difference**

Try to involve your partner in your day-to-day life as much as possible. Telling each other about even the most trivial parts of your day will make you both feel closer as well as ease any awkward feelings once you do see each other.

Also be creative with your love. I know there is nothing better than being there with him/her at the same moment, but what’s the next best thing? Technology of course is always handy! Use email, even webcams to communicate or even cam dates. I also sent him a love letter and cards once a week, sometimes we sent each other songs via e-mail or the messenger, a gift by mail once in a while, try 1800 flowers in special occasions, we had a history with them! lol Surprise them with a visit for the weekend! We saved money and took turns visiting each other during holidays and college breaks. Watch a TV show or game together over the phone so you can feel like you’re doing something together.

Be creative, some say long distance love can hardly survive, and even though I kinda agree, I believe if you truly love each other then nothing is impossible even a 1000 miles can't keep you apart for ever!! Good luck!! :)

Move closer.

A long distance relationship can work, if you know the person first. Otherwise you tend to only see the good as both as on their best behavior when meeting and talking. There are many things that you will never know until you live in the same city.

1. Develop your trust on your significant other.
2. LOTS of patience
3. Show your affection one way or the other.
4. keep communication open

that's all i can think of right now. I'm on a long distance relationship myself and I'm trying to do these 4 and as far as I know we're still on the same page.
