While it does seem unfair to the Canadians, Mexicans, Brazilians, Argentinians, etc. to call ourselves "Americans," that's the default. "United Statesians" never caught on.

You could always sound British and call us "Yankees." :-)

People from Italy ARE Italians. People from the USA are Americans. USA stands for United States of America. When this country was settled and finally came together we were a bunch of states (like little countries) and then we became United. Thus The United States of America.

They call themselves Americans, although all the people in the Americas are actually Americans too... (that's why in Spanish we have the word "estadounidense", because they are from Estados Unidos = United States).
But the right word in English would be American.
