You may have to configure you messaging application so that it will utilize your webcam and/or microphone. I haven't used but a few of those kinds of applications..and not knowing your messaging app, I couldn't advise too specifically, but check for something like "preferences", "tools", "settings" or "options"; one of those should lead you to a setup screen for your conference devices.
Additionally, your computer may (I don't know your specs) require more memory (maybe even video dedicated memory) to allow video conferencing. I mean, my computer had (when I first bought it) a 1.3ghz processor, 128mb of ram and 16mb video memory. It wasn't until I at least bumped up the video memory to 64mb that I could successfully do video conferencing. My guess is that on a computer with twice the other specs (a 2.6ghz processor and 256mb of ram), if it still has a fairly tame video memory, it might still have problems.
Lastly (from me, anyway), you could try downloading an updated driver for the webcam from the the webcam manufacturer's website. That's a free option too.
