Don't listen to them. This is an automatic function called - guess what?.....FOOTNOTES!.

Click at the end of the word where you want the number to go. Choose Insert/Footnote from the menu. You'll get a dialog box come up - click OK. The insertion point will now be at the bottom of the page with a number next to it where you type the footnote.

The number will also be next to the word you chose in the main text. Each word you add a footnote to will automatically take on the next number. If the word should move to another page through a page break, the footnote will automatically move with it and renumber automatically.

If you want to delete a footnote, delete the number in the main text area then the footnote attached will disappear and the other footnotes will renumber.

Two methods:

↓ Place a number next to the word
↓ Hightlight the number
↓ Go to font options
↓ Select (tick) the box labeled "Superscript"
↓ Click okay
↓ The number will be reduced in size

However this method is very time comsuming so I something just simply place (...) after the reference ie. (1)

I hope this helps and hope you write a good report...
