First off you need to be 21 to be in any law enforcement unless you do dispatch which is 18. Not sure about all states but here in MS you have to pass the physical by doing 50 push-ups,75 sit-ups,40 yard dash in less then 30 sec.,and run a mile and a half in under 14 minutes. I'm sure there is more but at this point i don't remember. You need to be a high school grad or college grad depending on which you choose and have a clean background which means no criminal record and no tickets. You also have to have good credit for some reason. All of this to get on patrol. As for the jail or dispatch just need to be old enough and got thru the background check and be a high school grad. Hope this helps a little.

You do have to be fit, but from where I come from, in fitness, you need to have the correct BMI (Body Mass Index) no greater than 27.5
Your Body Mass Index measures your height/weight ratio. Its your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your heights in metres.
To pass fitness, you simply need to complete a course in under 5 minutes, some people have been known to walk it & still pass.
I'm from Victoria, Australia so where ever you are from, no doubt it'll be different requirements.
Go to your local police station, you'll find the officers will be more than happy you answer your questions & give you information.

By the way, Cprucka, I'd like to see you repeat what you said above when you actually NEED the police, when you go to dial the emergency number in the future ask yourself did you really mean what you said.
Vini is asking for info about being recruited, NOT YOUR OPINION. When he wants your opinion, he'll ask for it. Until then, how about shutting up?

Different departments have different requirements. Generally, you need to pass some minimal fitness tests, you need to be a competent writer (which it looks like you aren't). Many require that you be 21 when you are sworn in, so you could be in the academy when you are 20. Then you have to pass their tests, which includes an interview. Interviews don't have requirements, you just have to make them like you.

Many things can give you a boost: medical training (EMT or paramedic), an AA or BA in criminal justice, completion of a law enforcement certification academy or course, forensics training (like CSI), and prior military service, especially if you are an MP in the military.

States have specific requirements to be eligible. Local agencies must adhere to the minimum requirements but can also make them tougher. So the requirements will be different from agency to agency.

Most require you to be at least 21 at the time of appointment but no older than 35.

Most agencies require at least 2 year degree. Some 4 yr.

Must pass a written exam.

Must pass a physical agility test which includes running 1.5 miles in set time. Push ups in set time, Sit ups in set time, Bench press anywhere from 98-106 % of your weight, sit and reach test, and at times a swim test.

Must pass oral interview #1

Must pass background investigation ( criminal history check )

Must pass oral interview #2 with commission board

Must pass psychological test

Must pass credit check

Must pass pre employment physical. ( drug test )

Then your hired..... then you have to pass the academy and final test. Then you have to pass FTO training. Then your an Officer....

Good luck

You need to check into this in the area that you want to work as a police officer. All states have a law enforcement governming body at the state level. They have thier own requirements on being employed as a police officer.

From there it goes down the jail. You get into counties and cities and they have thier own requirements, and then the individual departments have thiers.

Thinkg about where you want to work at, and check with them.

WHY would you WANT to be a cop? Need extra money? You think you are going to make a difference, right? You're going to get killed. Go ahead a put a big target on your chest. Just remember, they will come after your family too. You think Bush is going to help, yea, right, which week do you want him to help? Took him long enough to got into New Orleans and he knew how bad they had it.
