My own view is that God hides from us deliberately. I mean, if he's God, he could just appear in the sky and tell us stuff. Then there would be no question about it. 'Hey, abortion is WRONG! Didn't you hear God last Tuesday?' But instead, if he exists at all (which is another argument) he obviously would rather have us figure stuff out for ourselves. He gives us the intellectual capacity to do this, which I think is a great gift. He also gives us CRITICAL FACULTIES so we will know when we're being bamboozled. But some people just LOVE to be bamboozled. Consequently, ALL theology is tentative and speculative. It is a philosophy based on things that can't be known! ALL religious doctrine is man made, for people who just have to have answers. People who prefer the questions to the answers are not great lovers of 'obligatory' doctrines. I have studied the Bible and I think it's fascinating just on the level of literature. But its been edited, censored, redacted, rearranged, selected, etc. for thousands of years. The best versions we have are copies of copies of translations of translations. For the first few millennia it was copied by hand and changes were introduced, both by mistake and on purpose, some small and subtle and some big and ignorable. The four stories of the life of Jesus were written at least 70 years after Jesus lived, by people who never actually knew or saw him, in a language he didn't even speak! If God was really trying to talk to us, to reveal truths to us, don't you think he could do better than that? BTW, Jesus' descent into hell is not in the Bible, it's 'traditional'.
