A gentle swat on the butt with an open hand and a disapproving no spoken while making eye contact is good enough to stop any child in their tracks. There is a very fine line between discipline and abuse. Never use paddles, belts. The goal is not to hurt. The goal is to make the "no" stick.

Are you speaking of spanking a child or an adult?
A person should never hit another person. I don't care who you are or what you like having done to you or the reverse.

Yes, I've been spanked by an abusive parent, many times, with a hand, belt, paddle, ax handle, piece of hose, you name it I was hit with it.

With my hand.... just the way I was spanked (and hated-- really hated)... and probably about 4 or 5 times in my memory. Later, as a social worker, a foster parent, and a parent education co-ordinator, I had the opportunity to really get to know about Adlerian Psychology and that approach to parenting: mutual respectful, democratic, and non-punitive. It made a huge difference in our lives (let alone our children's) and I am so thrilled to see how our son parents because he had a model of not spanking and being effective.

Okay if the child is over 5 then there is no reason to spank.They are old enough to understand a punishment. Like taking something away they like or not letting them do something they like.But under 5 I spanked my child on the butt for things to get his attention.Like a swat when he wasn't listening so I could get his attention to tell him something.Or the time he tried to reach for the stove,I hit his hand hard then told him why he couldn't do that. Thats how I did it and now he is working all day and goes to college at night.

I've done a one quick, cupped blow to the bottom to get their attention a few times. Nothing that would really hurt but would make more of a noise than anything else.

I had the crap beaten out of me when I was little for no good reason, it was just because my mother felt like it. I know what being physically and mentally abused by a parent is and would never visit that upon a child. Doing what I described above isn't harming them or being abusive.

If you are referring to children the answer must be never but if there is no other way then a smack on the legs or bottom with your hand only, NEVER with a belt or any other object. If you are thinking about an adult for some sexual pleasure then I strongly suggest you ask them first otherwise you may get more than you bargained for.

I work at a daycare with one year olds- I take care of 5 of them at one time. Obviously spanking is not an option, but i can honestly say that i have NEVER felt the need to physically harm a child- never. Words are your best friend, whether they are one or 15, communication is important. It allows them to express themselves and tell you what they need- if they can do that and you LISTEN then there is NO reason to spank a child.
