Usually only if you have two incomes and one spouse can be taxed at a much lower rate or if one spouse has significant deductions that are subject to the AGI limitations (medical expenses or casaulty losses).

It may also be a good idea if you don't want to be liable for your spouses taxes.

May I suggest you use a tax program that calculates which method is better.

If one of you has very high medical expenses, and you each have enough deductions to itemize, it could be advantageous to file as married filing separately. Other than that, you almost always do as well or better by filing joint.

If one of you doesn't trust the other enough to sign a joint return, then file separately.
