Radar detectors are legal to own and operate in passenger vehicles in the state of California. Currently the only state where it is illegal to operate a radar detector is Virginia (also Washington D.C.)

Laser jammers are illegal to operate in California. Radar jammers are illegal to own and/or operate in all 50 states per the Federal Communications Commission.

Radar detectors are illegal in commercial vehicles weighing over 10,000 pounds in all fifty states, per Title 49 Transportation Act.
Radar detectors are also illegal to operate on any military base.

Hope that summarizes it.

The problem is, the police don't use radar detectors as much as they do in other parts of the country.

Better to just drive safely.

Radar detectors are legal in California, in privately owned passenger vehicles. They are illegal nationwide in commercial vehicles. I don't know what a police detector is.

I think it's interesting that the other answerers say they are legal in california. As far as I have always known they are not legal in CA. If you look in say Cabella's catologue or similar, they will not ship to California.
