A family friend co-signed with me to help my credit, but he died of a heartattack, and I cannot get his death certificate to transfer the title to my name. How can I get this document? The spouse refuses to give it to me. Help!

Is your name also on the title to the car? Or do you have the contract from the finance company that shows you also own the car? Some kind of official proof that the car is yours? Check with your local DMV to see exactly what you need to transfer ownership if you are entitled to the vehicle. Contact your State or County to see what their rules are. You may be able to get a copy of the death certificate from them, if that is all you need.
If your name is on the title, proving it is your car too, then the spouse may legally own half of the car. So you may have to get a lawyer to straighten this out if the spouse is uncooperative. Different states have different rules and regulations regarding this type of situation. Some states only have joint ownership, "and" on the title, others have "and/or" and others just have "or" if there is a second name on the title. If there is only your friends name on the title you may have a problem getting the title from the family. Basically if it was just in your friends name it is your word against the family who owns the car.
Good luck.

You should get the car title. Call DMV and explain it to them. Do you have any receipts or cancelled checks to prove that you paid? If you really need his death certificate you can probably get it from where ever it is that they issue them. Why can't the spouse loan it to you? Is she able to go with you to get the paper work taken care of? If you are very nice to her; she may help you. After all, she is grieving and may not realize everything that she is doing. It will work itself out. Just be a little patient.
Also, ask DMV if a copy of his death certificate would be legal? Maybe the lady would get you a copy if she wouldn't loan it to you.

Talk to the undertaker...he will direct you; if he doesnt then get hold of your representative...only you and the family friend have access to account because of privacy laws...
