Sign up for a small package that will cover you while at sea and each time you get to a port find an internet cafe. We do that all of the time and you can generally get high speed service in many places for less than half the price on ship. We have used internet cafe's in Sweden, Canada, Greece, Costa Rico, Cozumel, Gran Cayman, Germany, and a number of port stops. Sometimes you have to ask where the cafes are, we usually ask a tour guide. Or, do a google search of the port stops and seek internet cafes.

The problem we found with the internet cafe is when the ship is moving the service is shakey, in and out. If this happens, ask for a refund.

Some ships now have wireless and you can use your own laptop, but you pay the same rates; its NOT free.

I don't know about the line you are going on but I recently took a Norwegian cruise and didnt even bother to pack my laptop because the rates were rediculous. You can either use their computers for an obnoxious hourly fee or bring you laptop and jump onto their network, also for a fee.

If you really need it for work though look for contests the day you board the ship. On my boat they raffled off several packages of free internet time. I spotted this just by exploring the boat the first day. Hope this helps and enjoy your cruise!

Ships do have internet but it is very expensive and very slow. We'll miss you while you're gone, but don't waste your time and money trying to do Y!A while you're on the ship.

You're right, Cingular won't work in the middle of the ocean.

Unless you wont to carry your own satellite dish, you're stuck with the ship's options.

Some cruise ships have wireless internet, check to confirm if yours does or not. Cuz that will be free.

I heard that you can now take your own laptop to the wireless area of the cruise.

If you have your own computer the wireless option is your best bet

I was going to say satellite, but I see someone else beat me to it.
