The life expectancy does vary by breed, dog size and also the health of that particular line. Some lines are healthier than others (for instance a friend of mine use to breed/show Newfoundlands and her line lived to be healthy/active 13 years of age).

Another factor is the quality of their diet and quality of care they recieve throughout their lifetime. Generally, the better care provided the more apt they are to live to the longer end of that breeds life expectancy.

From my own experience, my grandmother had a fawn and white long coat chihuahua, Peaches, that lived to by 18 1/2 years old. And she was healthy til then end- though she slept alot. But, she was also well taken care of and from healthy lines.

Yes, life expectancy varies greatly with breed. There are EXCEPTIONS to everything, but generally smaller breed dogs live longer than the larger breeds. And the giant breeds have the shortest life expectancy

Yes, it does. For example, an Irish wolfhound lives about7-8 years, because they are big. But a shiba inu, on the other hand, being small, lives 14-16 years. I think the longest (on record) a dog ever lived is 27 years, but I'm not sure. Try google. It's the best!

P.S. Sorry I don't know the long-lived breed. Hope my answer helped!

yes the larger the breed generally the shorter the life span. For example a poodle (toy) can live quite comfortably up to 20 years!! But an Irish wolf hound or a St Bernard etc 8 years old is really getting old. So yes it greatly varies. However with modern science and further knowledge with pets and illness and diet this theory is almost becoming obsolete.

Yes, the smaller the breed the longer they live. The oldest I've ever seen was a 19yr old Yorkie. Small breeds tend to live 14-16 yrs, larger ones 10-12.

Yes! I don't know exactly which has the longest, but generally smaller dogs live longer than bigger dogs. I haven't done a lot of research, but I'm sure you could find in Ripley's how old the oldest dog was.

"An Australian Cattle-dog named Bluey, owned by Les hall of Rochester, Victoria, Australia, was obtained as a puppy in 1910 and worked among cattle and sheep for nearly 20 years. He was put to sleep on November 14, 1939 at the age of 29 years, 5 months."

I don't believe the people that are saying that little dogs live longer - I had a large mutt (100lbs) that lived until she was 17 and my best friend just put her LARGE lab (120lbs) down at 15.

Dogs are just like humans, they go when it's their time.
