An excellent question. It is amazing that Christians are so astounded by atheism at all. Like Sam Harris says in one of his books, every religious person knows what it is like to be atheist. Because every religious person has looked at another religion and said to themselves......there is no way I can subscribe to that. Their beliefs are absurd.

Okay there are two groups at each others throats and than there is this guy watching it all. Not dissing them, not helping them just watching,
IS this one person respecting or disrespecting the other two groups? I Don't think so!
If people of other faiths want to go at it and be disrespectful it doesn't or shouldn't affect others who are not in it.
Atheists can respect or not respect or have no interest either way in the mindlessness of other groups. Personally I am Jewish and I have no problem with those who believe in Christ. It's (not always ) but usually the other way. It sucks and I wish we as a people would change but ... . who knows
Bye.

This question is kind of stereotyping atheists, saying that they all respect each others faiths, and religious people, saying that they don't respect each others faiths. There are atheists that don't respect faith, and there are religious people who do respect other faiths. There's always good and bad in every group.

Because we have a more rational view of faith than many people of different faiths.
I can respect (in the sense of tolerate, not in the sense of look up to) other people's faith because it doesn't undermine my faith in any way that I find meaningful.
I suspect that people of faith who do not respect other people's faith have something lacking at the core of their own faith. Because of this they feel undermined when people of other faiths (or, god forbid, atheists) do not agree with them.
As an example, if someone tells me I'm going to be damned, I can ignore it - it has no meaning to me.
On the other hand, if I point out to a fundamentalist that the dates in the bible say that the flood happened during the time where Egypt and Babylon were both keeping records, none of which mention that they all died in a flood, this strikes at their fear that the bible might not be totally, literally true and if it is not totally, literally true then what parts can be discarded as myth or metaphor and what parts must be retained?
I think you will find that as you move out from scriptural fundamentalism of any sort (Christian, Muslim, Jewish) towards the more liberal cults, you will find more tolerance.

Not all faiths refuse to respect other faiths. But I think it is easier for an athiest to respect people's beliefs because they don't have anything spirtually on the line. To some faiths, they might feel that respecting another faith would give it credit, and to them, that's wrong. In their minds, only one religion is correct. In an athiest's mind, they're all incorrect, so it won't anger anyone (ie God) to give a little respect.

I'm a Catholic which suppose to be the most respectfully. But is not we suppose love the children but the priestess abuse them so they give a good example to the others. We not suppose take the other people country and the Americans do we no suppose have any organize crime but we are n 1. I'm not a priest or a very educate man but at least I'm a loving person which I can not heart any one special the children so do not blame the religion have to blame the individual evil and they always get a way with murder because hour low protect them. In the other religion do not happen any one whom commit a crime has to pay for; and I think is fare for every one

Im atheist, but understand that people believe in their religions, and thats cool with me. Everyone is entitled to their view. My issue is with the crap that gets carried out in the name of religion, and its sad to say, that this is a big issue these days, and always has been, and its a shame, if these religions of peace truly were peaceful, the world would be a better place. Unfortunately, that is not the case, and you have the crusades, the current situations in iraq/afghanistan and africa and many not wanting to be involved in such a battle are drawn in. Love people, not hate an idea, than maybe we could have peace.

Faith is not deserving of respect. Faith is nothing more than a person's decision to ignore reality and live their lives based on a concept of some reward. In my opinion, those who claim to have the most faith are really claiming to be the least in touch with reality.

This is an excellent question!
But it does not matter to me whether folks of other faiths get along or not.
Each individual must be free to make their own decision regarding how they treat other people.
I'm going to respect the ones who show me respect and I'm going to have disdain for those who treat me and others with disdain.

They do respect others. The religious ones are at the center of the problem because they think that their religion should control the world.
