I have a 3 year old female cat that keeps pooping in the bathtub. My husband is very angry and wants me to get rid of her. I thought she was only doing it when the water was not left of for her to drink. (she has done this since the day she came home) I got her a water fountain a few weeks ago and she uses it sometimes. Today she pooped again and the water was running. I don't understand. Can someone please help. My husband and I are hardly speaking because of this.

Hi there...sometimes cat inappropriately soil to tell us something is to their disliking or they have an actual medical condition that causes litter box avoidance behaviours. First consider all of the following possibilities such as:
- changes with litter brands
- location of the litter box isn't private enough
- some cats like to have one box to defecate and another to urinate
- cleanliness (some cats are very finicky and prefer a super clean box)
- as a general rule there should be one litter box for each cat plus one extra as a back up
- unspayed/un-neutered if cat is over the age of 5-7 months. Cats will become aggressive as they sexually mature and territorially mark with either urine or defecating.

If all these have been ruled out, there's a chance that your cat may have developed another underlying medical problem which can contribute to accidents outside of the box. Cats will associate pain while using box and change their habits as a result.

In the meantime consider adding a little bit of water to the tub to discourage her from going in the tub, but please note she may begin inappropriately soiling elsewhere in the home if she loses access to the tub.

Why cats soil inappropriately by Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine for Feline Health: http://www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/brochures/Housesoiling.html

Why do cats eliminate outside of the litter box?
One common misconception is that cats soil in inappropriate places for revenge. It is tempting to conclude, "He defecated on the living room carpet to punish me for leaving him for the weekend." But this kind of calculation requires sophisticated cognitive abilities that cats aren't believed to possess. Furthermore, this conclusion assumes that cats view their urine and feces as distasteful, when in fact they do not. It is only we humans who view it that way.

Medical Problems
So why do cats urinate or defecate on your bed or carpet? Medical problems are one possibility. Inflammation of the urinary tract may cause painful or frequent urination, inability to urinate, bloody urine, and crying during urination. An affected cat is likely to eliminate outside the litter box if he comes to associate the box with painful urination, or if he has an increased urgency to urinate. In addition, kidney, liver, and thyroid diseases often lead to increased drinking and urination. Inflammation of the colon or rectum, intestinal tract tumors, intestinal parasites, and other gastrointestinal conditions may cause painful defecation, increased frequency or urgency to defecate, and decreased control of defecation. Age-related diseases that interfere with a cat's mobility (for example, arthritis, nervous system disorders, or muscular diseases), or with his cognitive functions can also influence his ability to get to the litter box in time. In short, any medical condition that interferes with a cat's normal elimination behavior can lead to house soiling.

I had this same problem. Sometimes cats poop and pee certain places because they love the way a certain texture feels on thier feet. My "bathtub pooper", Hershey, started going outside to do her thing, and since then she hasn't pooped in the tub. SO try that, or a different kind of litter. Fill your cat box with good ole dirt. Thats what they used in the good old days when cat litter wasn't available. Also try shredded newspaper. Try different things. Good luck!

I say try putting the cat little box in the bathtub for a little while so that they start using the little box and the gradually move the box back to where you want it so that they move with the box.
That, OR, just close all the door, especially the bathroom door, so that she is in the same room as the catbox and can't get into the tub.
I'm sorry and I wish you good luck. :-/

My kitten was a shelter kitten. I brought her home and she went straight to the litter box. Then she started pooping in my garden tub. My cat litter is clean. I was ready to take her back to the shelter, but instead I put water in my garden tub and she has not went in it once nor did she went anywhere else in the house.
