Most of what she gives me makes me feel like a middle aged dork. Actually she has great taste, but extremely different from what suits me. I don't feel all that guilty about what she spends because I know she always buys things on sale, but it just seems unfortunate to have all those clothes go to waste. Eventually they end up at the thrift store.

She doesn't at all get it at all when I try to explain what I like and don't like. She thinks I should be her clone!

I have the same problem. I've tried just about every suggestion and finally settled on donating the clothes to a shelter. That way the clothes are going to a good cause and I don't feel like they are going to waste. My mom has good intentions, but the reality is that she doesn't get my sense of style. When she asks about the clothes, I tell her the truth.

Oddly, one thing I have gotten her to stop buying is night gowns. I told her that my husband really didn't like the stuff she picked out and that did it. We're Hispanic and pleasing husbands is a big thing in our culture.

I had the same problem with my grandmother. I loved her to pieces, she would buy me sweatshirts with pictures on them and I would only put them on when I went in her house right as I was getting out of the car. Then I realized she is waistng her money and I am not being honest with her, so i just told her Gram you know i love you but things have changed since you were my age and it's very different purchasing clothes nowadays. The brands and styles and the way things fit are different and they change. When you get them on sail it's because they are out of style. Then i told her the thought was great but I never really wore the clothes. She was a little upset but ended up appreciating me being honest because she actually saved money by just giving me a card and like $20.00 instead. She forgave me and life went on.

Many years ago, I had the same problem. I ended up holding the dress or top (or whatever it was) up to myself and said, "This is really nice, but do you think it looks more like me or more like you"? And mom got the hint. From then on, she took me shopping with her when she wanted to buy me something. It's much easier to say "no, that's really not my style" when you're shopping together than when you receive it as a gift.

I don't think there's anything wrong with letting your mom know that while you love her style and the way she dresses, it doesn't suit YOUR personality (after letting her know how much you love her and the fact that she thinks of you when shopping).

I am getting the impression all moms are the same!

What I did and it worked fabulously b/c I didnt hurt her feelings - was ask her not to go shopping without me as some of clothing just didnt fit right even though it was my size.

That way- you can get a nice mom/ daughter day and she in turn can see what you pick out versus what you pick out....It became a fun event for us...and she now just gets me gift cards if I am not with her.

Ask her if next time you can go shopping with her so she can teach you to shop the sales. She will feel good about you wanting to spend time with her and you can show her what you like. Casually let her know that sometimes she picks up an item that me be a little to old for you or just not your style. No stretch wastebands!!lol

Hey we were all once the kid right!?!

Girl, I know the feeling! I'm almost 29 and my mother still buys me clothes sometimes. She buys things that usually are not me (but that she thinks would look cute) Almost everytime I have to call around and find out where she purchased them and take them back, or donate them. I think you can suggest to your mom that she give you a gift card (if it's a birthday or holidays etc.) that way you can pick out what you want and "take the stress away" from her (put it that way to her).

Just explain to your mom, that while you like her style, her style is not yours.

Then let her know that if she continues to give you clothing, they will wind up at the thrift store. Maybe she will think twice the next time

You need to be tactful, but still tell her that you don't use what she buys. Tell her that she has very good taste, but her style differs from yours.

Ask her if she will shop with you so that you can find something that you can wear with the other things that you have.

It is difficult to tell someone that you don't like what they buy, but you really should do it. In the long run, I would think she would be happy to buy you things that you would actually wear.

Sure there is a nice way. Just say to her : pretty please , mom, I have more than enough clothes and no more room to have more . Could 'ya cut it out til further notice ! Case closed .
Personally, I would just hang in there and let it ride . She obviously likes to shop and you are taking away a great fun time for us moms . Grit your teeth and be grateful you have a mom that loves you , I wish mine was still alive I would be nicer now too .
