If you have a Homeowner's Policy (Broad or Comprehensive) in Canada, you are covered to a small degree. Almost all companies will cover for unauthorized credit card use, loss cause by theft of debit card, or loss caused by forgery. The problem is that most companies will pay a maximum of $1000 (some may be as high as $2000, but rarely), although the deductible will usually not apply for these types of losses. It's best to review your policy to confirm your coverages/limits. According to BCAA, their Identity Theft Coverage covers the above and a few other coverages, and their limit is $10 000. Their website states this coverage costs $40/year. The best option is contact an agent/broker near you and discuss your needs with them, or contact the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

Identity theft insurance is just beginning to become more available in many locations. In Ontario, you can check out CAA for identity theft insurance. CAA also offers home insurance; identity theft is a rider that you can add to your homeowner policy.

If you already have a homeowners policy, it could be worthwhile to check with them to see if they can provide you with an identity theft rider.
