The SAT has three sections, Writing; Math; and Critical Reading, each on a scale of 200 to 800.So in order to get a perfect score, one would need to get an 800 on all sections and have a total score of 2,400. But out of the approx. 1,000,000 students who take the SAT each year, on average, only 20 of them get a perfect score. Since there is no such thing as passing or failing the SAT, most people only wish to receive grades high enough for them to be accepted in the colleges of their choice. The average total score is approximately 1,538 points (520 in Math, 510 in Writing, and 508 in Critical Reasoning) and it is acceptable for most colleges and universities. But some of the top schools (especially Ivies) will expect SAT scores of 2,100 of more.
