8. Comfortable external frame backpack
9. Clothing (no cotton clothing)
10. Chocolate bars
11. Pictures of friends and family
12. Currency
13. Hat
14. ID
15. Hiking pole
16. iPod (I like music)
17. Good book
18. Stamps/envelopes
19. Sunscreen
20. Toothbrush, toothpaste
21. All-purpose soap. (good for dishes, hair, laundry, etc)
22. First Aid kit (complete with medicine for upset tummies)
23. Parachute cord (you never know)
24. Duct Tape (you never know)
25. Waterproof matches
26. Chapstick
27. Sleeping bag with liner
28. Small Tarp (works as a tent or as waterproof covering for pack)
29. Nalgene bottle
30. Ground cloth
31. foam rubber pad
32. 3 bandannas (One for your head, two for whatever else)
33. Camp stove and fuel
34. Small pot
35. Map
36. Phrasebook (for foreign lands where I don't speak the language
That should prepare you for just about anything you would run into. Whether you're in civilization or the middle of nowhere.

Well, that's a quick question.
but if this is for school, certainly you can come up wit h40 things by yourself. it's not a necessarily tough project. But I'll try to help.
A few things I would bring (I won't put all 40):
-clothing(practical and flirty)This alone could equal 40.
-sunscreen
-insect repellant (hint-it also helps if you say where this journey is to)
-a good book
-my ipod (lame and tacky i know, but you never know. Yo ucould alwasy use the headphones to strangle a charging rhinocerous)
-johnny depp(a pirate journey, eh, matey?)
-swim suit
-pens (pens are always important)
-money (if I don't know where I'm going, I at least need to feel secure that I have enough to get through by...or if I need to buy my way out of a Thailand prison..."Golden Palace", anyone?)
-my camera, to capture all my journeys
-cell phone(also helpful, see "Golden Palace", Clair Danes could have totally used a cel phone)
-toiletries
-shoes(flipflops,heels,boots,sneakers)
-a machete(though maybe not needed if my journey takes me to, say, Pennsylvania, but the uninhabited part of the People's democratic Republic of Congo-could be handy)
-Orlando Bloom(a pirate/ Middle Earth journey?)
-Zac Efron (if it's in a deserted place like the Congo, it would give me my chance to get rid of that horrid, talentless piece of...and no one would know)
-my glasses
-sunglasses
-matches?it helps people on Survivor
-pictures of my family and friends, if it's along journey
-travelers checks-so my identity is not stolen in the Congo
-French to English dictionary, because after 3 years, I still can't speak that horrid language. What if I were in Quebec????I'd ahve to beg for food with small vocabulary.J'AI FAIM!!!

You didn't say what kind of journey...so...change of clothes, underwear, money, id, chapstick and/or makeup, hairties, sanitaries, soap, shampoo, lotion, and a pair of shoes. Ok, I'm ready to go.
