My 6 month old girl chihuahua has been throwing a fit lately. She was very curious when I was setting up the crib early on this week. I'm expected to be due by this saturday, do you think that dogs know? I'm just referring to the "Lady & Tramp" movie, do you think it's true? Please share.

Yes, pregnant women emit a scent that the dog can sense. Also, if you're setting up the room, that's time the dog doesn't get with you.

Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise, dogs are VERY smart and have a very keen sense of what's going on with their people.

I'm not sure they know you're going to have a baby -- I don't think they think that far into the future, you know? And since your chi is only 6 mos old, she doesn't know you any other way!

I do know they can tell when things are "different" with you. You've heard about dogs that can sniff out oncoming seizures and even cancer, some that have alerted owners who didn't even know they had it. And pregnancy causes a lot more extreme chemical changes in your body than that.

When I was pregnant my dogs, who had been with me for years by then, became clingier -- they wanted to be with me, near me, all the time. After the baby was born, my ridgeback especially shifted that protective attention to him. They've all been good with him, better than I'd anticipated.

Just keep giving your chi attention like you did before, even though it will be hard for the first few months, and when the baby starts reaching curious little hands over, be sure to protect her. She's little and those pokes and pinches hurt. Our littlest dog, a 15lb terrier mix, is the only one who's snapped at my son, when we were too slow to rescue her from him, so we gate her out of the playroom when he gets into his really playful moods.

Good luck with yours!

yeah dogs know, my dogs defintly knew when I was pregnant. Dogs can smell even the slightest changes in the human body they use dogs now for people who have siezures because the dog know before hand that the person is going to have a siezure. My dogs have always been very careful with me I have a progressive nuerological desease that causes severe pain they can sence when it's worse and when I was pregnant they wouldn't let me out of my wheelchair if I did get out they followed very closely beside me holding me up so that I wouldn't fall if I started to fall they would wine and push at me. they would also lick my stomach and wine and sort of cry. Now that my kids are four and two they protect and watch out for them. good luck and have fun

My sister-inlaw was telling me that she read that dog's can tell and they'll try to hump you. I know it sounds strange but she came over and sure enough my dog did try to hump her.
