You don't feel anything during the surgery. I've had a number of different kinds of surgeries (c-sections, partial mastectomy, fixing a shattered leg with plates and pins), and they used different kinds of anesthesia so I was awake for some and not for others. I never felt anything during any of them. When you wake up in recovery, they will continue to give you pain meds so you will be comfortable. Pain management is priority in any surgery and the team will take care of your needs and make sure you are not in pain. I was kept comfortable during my recoveries and given meds as needed for after I went home, until I was able to manage my pain with Tylenol or some other OTC remedy. You have nothing to fear!

Surgery hurts under a local anesthetic as you can still feel the pressure, pinching, and pulling. Under general anesthesia (knocked out) 99.9999% of the time, you will feel nothing. So, only if they make a mistake will you be able to feel. Recovery from major surgery is often agony as nurses like to say "in a few more minutes" and leave you without pain reliever. Nurses are about 99.99% sadistic to major surgery patients because the doctor pissed them off when he told them just who the doctor is - NOTE: the nurse is Not. Nurses are all good except one on any given shift and you will always get that sadistic one if you had major surgery. You will hurt beyond compare. Be mean and tell the head nurse and doctor it that biotch comes in this room again, you will be in court to answer why. Then you can get your painkiller on time.

You normally have an anesthesiologist give you something so you can't feel the pain during surgery. It's AFTER surgery that the pain comes, and that can be controlled / minimized with pain killers. I don't know of any surgeries that are pain-free.
