In addition to preventing your dogs from begging, yes, just any old people food is not good for dogs. Most processed foods contain high amounts of fat, salt and sugars--not good for anybody, but not all people pay attention to the content of their food. Keep in mind that dogs don't brush their teeth on a regular basis (unless you're the kind of owner who keeps up on this) and, thus, are more at risk for cavities, tartar buildup and such. Also, there are many seemingly innocuous foods that one may think is safe, but actually isn't. For example, an apple is fine for your dog to eat, but apple seeds are not as they contain trace amounts of cyanide (poison). You also don't want to give your dog filler products (wheat and some grains) that are low in nutritional value and provide unnecessary calories. Consult your vet for a list of safe foods. Generally unprocessed somewhat bland foods are OK, such as white rice, plain yogurt, some fruits and vegetables. Quality dog foods contain just the right balance of nutrients for your pet and are most likely your best bet. You can also look up what is safe for your pet to eat and what isn't at sites like:

There are lot's of human foods, that can cause great harm or sometimes even kill your dog, if you give them the wrong food. It is recommened, that you never give your dog any human food, because certain foods can be dangerous, they don't have the proper nutrition that a dog really needs and if you feed it human food, you will have a big problem getting them to eat their own food, because they'll expect human food every time. You should just stick to a high quality nutritious dog food. It's much better for the dog.

Those people who you are talking about that give puppies and dogs people food have overweight sickly dogs with a lot of vet bills. Those are also the dogs that fart a lot (and it stinks bad) and poop on the floor every time you leave the house. Give your puppie proper food for puppies and dogs and an occasional treat made for dogs. If you wish, you can taste what you are giving him and you will find that it does taste good. Maybe once a month, you can give the poor doggie a bite of a hot dog or something - not a whole hot dog - people food upsets their entire system.

Human food for any dog is not a good idea. Puppies need puppy food for vitamins and minerals that are in the food, giving them human food will cause them to have the runs, which is not pleasant for them or you. There are some foods that can kill a dog such as walnuts but others are ok. If your dog is over weight you can give them apples or raw carrots instead of doggie treats. I would check with your vet on what foods are ok to feed a dog but for a puppy stick with the puppy chow.

It can be bad to give your dog/pup human food... there are starches and sugars in our more processed foods that the dogs' digestive systems can't really digest that well. And it's also very high in sodium (salt). Avoid chocolate, milk *gives them diahrrea*, grapes/raisins *it will shut their kidneys down*...
If you do give your dog human food, just give small amounts. Don't make it a daily habit though because dogs will tend to stop eating their own food because what you're giving them tastes better. A treat now and then is okay. We usually give our dogs half of a hot dog or sometimes a peppermint. But for a healthy treat they both love...ice cubes. Both my 2 yr. old dog and my 5 mo. old puppy love to chew on ice cubes. Summertime, wintertime, anytime.

Give your puppy what you want.People tend to think that dogs aren't allowed to have "people" food, but really, what is there food made of then? Chicken, lamb, beef, rice, hmmmm - that seems like food I may eat. Just be safe and don't feed junk food. Nothing with sugars or deep-fried. Don't worry, I've never had a problem.

It is not wise to start giving any dog human food, if this is the basis of his diet. Dog food is made specifically to suits the needs of dogs and this is what a dog, or puppy should have, above all else. I recommend you feed your puppy the same diet as his, hopefully, reputable breed has weaned him onto. This will ensure he gets all the nourishment he needs, and his tummy isn't upset by a switch to something different. You can of course feed cooked chicken breast, white fish and rice, but he will need the proper vitamins and supplements to compliment this. As his breeder, and follow his advice. Food that is bad for dogs includes chocolate, especially dark chocolate, onions, grapes and rasins.

Although it's not healthy for a dog to have "table scraps" an occasional healthy "treat" is o.k...By "treat" I mean raw (washed) carrott sticks (broken into smaller bites of course) and most dogs love canned green beans (the generic brand will do just fine). The bottom line is, everything in moderation. Just a few "treats" as a reward is enough. And though the veggies I've mentioned are good for dogs, a regular stable diet of quality dog food is best. And try to avoid dog food that has corn as the main ingredient. It causes bloating and can lead to intestinal problems later on down the road. You can talk to your vet to get some good ideas on which brand is best for your breed.

The problem is: once used to people food, the dog won't eat dog food, and dog food has certain things in it that are good for dogs and not available in people food. I sprinkle a supplement...Missing Link... on my baby's people food. I think it provides all the dog-necessary nutrients that are not found in people food. So he gets the best of both worlds.

Of course, the people food should be wholesome food like chicken breast, lean lamb, lean beef and any vegetable he's willing to eat. No baloney. No sausages. No junk food. No sugar. No salt. Of course, no chocolate or onions. No crap. .

Yes, It might seem nice to give your puppy human food in the begining, b/c you think that its cute, and what not, but later on down the road, it definitley causes problems. For one, the dog will beg and stare and jump on you and your guests if you are eating or preparing food, second, he will become picky, and will probably end up not eating his own food, and you will end up having to make human dinners for him daily. I know someone who ended up starting off a puppy on human food, and the dog refused any more dog food, and they had to end up ordering take out for the dog every nite! Crazy right?! If you want to feed your dog human food, if you feel it needs to be done, offer him human treats like maybe cheese or something for a trick, so he knows he has to earn it. But, especially dont start off a puppy on human food, b/c he will never know different and expect it. Other things that are things to think about is the health of the dog, teeth can deteriorate, can cause ulcers, and obesity, heart problems, and intestinal problems. Dont feel bad for a dog that doesn't get human food. He will never know what it tastes like, so he will never miss it. It sounds trivial, but it definitley matters. You dont want a wild dog running around jumping on the tables, eating off peoples plates after you walk out of the room for a second to refill youor drink, jumping on guests begging for food. Well I hope this helps. b./c i used to be a person who always fed dogs at the hosts dinner table, not thinking they said "dont feed the dog" for a reason. Well now i know!!
