If your sister has been treated numerous times and still has lice, they may have developed a resistance to the store shampoos. She needs to see a doctor about getting prescription strength products.

Care needs to be taken during the combing process to make sure that all the nits are out of the hair. If even one egg remains, there is a chance for reinfestation.

After treatment with the shampoo, your mother needs to get an electronic lice comb. (They sell these at most drug stores.) This needs to be used every single day, at least twice a day, to comb through the hair to make sure that the lice is gone from the hair. It's battery operated, and will buzz while the hair is combed. If a nit or louse is combed out, the device will zap it to kill it, and then will shut down so you can brush the nit or louse out of the comb. Hopefully this will get each little louse before it has time to migrate or reproduce.

After combing, and after shampooing every day, put a few drops of "Tea Tree Oil" on your palms, rub your hands together, and then run it through the hair. Lice hate that stuff. (You can get it at health food stores.) I'd do this for everyone's hair in the entire household.

You will have to completely treat the home, all stuffed animals, carpet, bedding, everything, again and again. Throughly saturate things with the spray. Bag up the stuffed animals and bedding in plastic bags, and place them into the attic or other area where they will get super hot. Leave them there for at least a week. At alternative to this is to put things in the dryer on a long hot cycle to kill the nasty little things.

And by the way, did you know lice like clean hair better than dirty hair? The clean hair is easier for them to grab onto. The dirty hair is slick from the oils, and the can get a good grip.

My daughter had lice last year. We treated her once with a drug store treatment, like Nix or something, and then for a week we put a mixture of cooking oil and vinegar on her hair under a shower cap for an hour each evening, then washed it out. Just to be safe I did another drug store treatment after that. The drug store treatment was supposed to kill the eggs as well as the lice. As for the rest of the house, a louse or an egg can't live away from a human body for more than 24 hours, so we put a lot of what she owned in big garbage bags and left them all out in our garage for a week or so. We vacuumed her mattress and our couch and anywhere else that seemed like a likely hiding spot, and we treated everyone else in the family once with the store treatment even though none of us showed any signs of having lice.

I don't know how old your sister is, but we learned some other hints as well. You don't have to cut her hair off, but if she has long hair then she might want to put it in braids or a ponytail. In my daughter's class, they all hang their coats and hats up on hooks beside each other in a small, squished space. I took a supply of big garbage bags into the classroom and asked the teacher to have each child put his outside clothing in a garbage bag and then hang the garbage bag on his coat hook, so lice couldn't travel from coat to coat. They did this for a month or so and the lice didn't spread any further. This year we're trying the tea tree oil thing, hopefully it works, and also I cut down on the number of times my kids wash their hair because lice spread more easily to clean hair. If your sister spends time with her head touching other people's heads, the lice can spread just as easily with short hair as with long. If she had it twice in a month it might just have been some eggs that you missed the first time hatching and starting the cycle all over again, or it could be that her class is passing it back and forth between them. Either way, yuck, and good luck.

No sharing of:
brushes, combs, barrets, scrungies, hats, earphones, pillow cases, sleeping same bed, etc. It's very difficult to get rid of the eggs, my daughter had lice for one month because when I though I had taken all the eggs out, there were one or two left and a new lice would pop! EEWWW! I did remember someone telling me to use mayonnaise on the hair as conditioner, leave it for a while (30-60 mins) and then take out the eggs this way. It worked! Apparently the grease from the mayo dissolves the glue from the eggs. My daughter smelled like chicken salad for a bit, but at least she was lice free!

Take out all the bedding from her bed, including mattress cover and wash in hot water and tumble dry in hot drier. Same thing with the towels. There is a spray that is sold next to the lice shampoo that gets rid of them in the rooms, plush toys, etc. I would do this every day (especially the sheets and pillowcase) until you don't see lice anymore. I did this for a week straight.

My children ended up with lice last month and a friend of mine said she uses tea tree oil and lavender oil in her shampoo. So that's what I have been doing. You can buy it at a health food store. I use a dropper and use one drop of each in a handful of shampoo. You could add several drops to a whole bottle but I don't like the way it smells. It has worked so far. The lice has not returned and I never caught it from my kids. Also make sure you comb her and your hair daily with a good lice comb to catch any thing you've missed or newly hatched eggs. I got a Rid comb from wal-mart for $7. If you keep on top of it it wont have a chance to spread and become worse. Good luck!

Although, seriously, misinformed people think lice is a DIRTY thing but it's not! Lice doesn't like dirty hair they like CLEAN hair!! Get a lice electronic hair comb and go through her hair everyday with it! It works great! My daughter got it from school and we had a hard time getting rid of it! Don't forget to do a treatment one week from the first one! Try a different lice shampoo and clean the house, get the spray for the furniture and put all of the stuffed animals into black trash bags and put them away for at least 1 week. Also, to help with the prevention of it, after she washes her hair, put something into it. Weather it be mouse, gel, or hairspray, put it in her hair to make it dirty! Spray her hair in the morning before going to school too! You can lice by trying on clothes too, just to keep in mind when shopping! Best of luck!

Lice like clean hair. Avoid washing it too often and when you do, put some product in. You also need to wash sheets in hot water and tumble dry all stuffed animals in a pillow case for 20 mins. Any brushes and combs need to be soaked in hot water as well.

wash all hair brushes in hot water with bleach.
wash all bed sheets in hot water.
dont let her lay on the couch with out a towel wrapped around her head. beacause the lice will spead on the couch.

when i had lice. my mom bought this "poison" at a drug store.
or just put cooking oil in her hair and have her sleep with it on over night and rinse it out the next morning.
that suffucates the lice.
hope that helped some.

Lice HATES clean hair. Make sure she washes her hair daily, doesn't share hats/headbands/hairties (and knows why not to), and that the sheets and toys are all thoroughly washed.

She needs to boil all of her hair brushes and barettes and wash her sheets in bleach and hot water to kill the eggs or she will keep getting it. The length of her hair has nothing to do with it really
