On the surface, your question seems silly, but it isn't. Somewhere back in our primitive past, we were programmed to check our leavings for parasites or abnormalities as a way of checking our health. This behaviour is common in omnivors and carnivores. Dogs, cats, bears and the like, all check their turds for odour, quality and whatever, before burying them or leaving them. Humans are just doing the same thing. Curiously, this behaviour does not seem instinctive in cattle, other herbivores or rodents. They just drop their loads and keep moving along.

The guys I hang out with have a running competition for who's anal waste is the longest. Personally, I'm hoping there hasn't been any real measuriing but there have been several estimations (I hope estimations) of over a foot.

I believe it is a habit for some and for others who may have some discomfort in the anal area, they may be checking for signs of bleeding or other irregularities.

It's actually a GOOD IDEA to look at your bowel movements! Check the color (you don't want BLACK- that means BLOOD), shape, and consistency. It's kinda gross, but really SHOULD be practiced!
