Well, they are our distant relatives, aren't they?

Interesting question. There was a lot of answers given that sound convincing but are actually totally wrong. Why are they wrong ? , because they don't follow what the Bible teaches on the subject. The Bible is extremely clear about what a soul is. The word Soul comes from Ne´phesh , that comes from a root Hebrew word meaning "breathe" and in a literal sense ne´phesh could be rendered as "a breather." Therefore , any creation that breathes , is a soul. As used in the Scriptures "soul" is shown to be a person, an animal, or the life that a person or an animal enjoys. The Soul is NOT some invisible spirit part of a person that floats away after death. For more Bible based information please feel free to email me.

That depends on your personal religion. Many cultures believe that animals do have spirits - what Christians call "souls". The Innuit people, for example, when they kill a seal for food and clothing (they must kill to survive), offer the body a drink of water and apologise to it so that when it reaches its spirit home it will tell the Great Creator that the hunter was kind to its spirit in death. Where I live, the indigenous peoples believe that all things in the world are related, humans, animals, plants and the landscape itself and that all these things are descended from ancestors in the Dreamtime and so have spirits and personalities. Our society developed into one that became divorced from the natural world and our religions reflect this. I don't think, though I may be wrong, that there are any Christian sects which believe animals have souls. - A great question!

I feel all animals have souls. That said, the gorilla's ability to sign about specific feelings, like the one who was so sad when her cat died... that does seem like extra proof, huh?

Gorillas can't communicate unless they are trained to perform specific acts, no more no less. As to whether they have a soul or not, no one knows.

Everything that exists is a facet of the quantum singular universe, expresions of vectoral perception. Since all things are one thing then yes, gorillas have a "soul" just as much as humans have a "soul" as do all things.

They are us, we are them, and all of us are singularly "god"

You can teach a ferret to use a cup to pee in, you can potty train dogs, cats can use a litter box...

It's called learning.
