At first they scared people to make them do good things, but then they realised there was money to be made, so they told people if they donated money to the church, there was a better chance that they would go to Heaven.

Yep, that's about it. Because if you don't put enough money in the basket they pass around, you WILL hear about it, believe me. One of the many reasons I'm a deserter, and loving it.

Yes, the God-fearing mentality only came from Christianity. I think this fear complex was a stroke of genius on Jesus' part. Fear keep people from thinking for themselves.
