I am thinking about buying a puppy at the end of the year. I want something small like a chihuahua or a poodle. What other types of small dogs are good as an apartment or house dog?

Dogs that do well in the city
Many breeds of dogs seem to have a secret yearning to become a couch potato and thus do well in apartments or condominiums.

Low Energy dogs
Those with low energy levels don't even need extensive walks or workouts as long as they get sufficient exercise and are not overfed.

Toy dogs have high energy levels in some cases, but they are small enough that they can satisfy their needs running about the apartment.

Small to medium size low to moderate energy dogs that are also suitable for apartment living include:

Cocker Spaniel,
Clumber Spaniel,
Sussex Spaniel,
Basset Hound,
Beagle,
Basenji,
Norwegian Elkhound,
Dachshund,
Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen,
Whippet,
most terriers,
Bichon Frise,
Bulldog (as long as there's no flights of stairs to climb daily),
French Bulldog,
Keeshond,
Finnish Spitz,
American Eskimo,
Lhasa Apso,
Schipperke, Corgi,
Shetland Sheepdog.
Medium energy dogs
Medium to large dogs that can adjust to living in good-sized apartments as long as they get moderately long walks and a weekly allowance of boisterous exercise include:

Brittany,
Springer Spaniel,
Akita,
Malamute,
Siberian Husky,
Newfoundland,
Boxer,
Rottweiler,
Mastiff, Bullmastiff,
Doberman
Pinscher,
Great Dane,
Samoyed,
St. Bernard,
Bernese Mountain Dog,
Chow Chow,
Collie,
Old English Sheepdog,
Shar Pei,
Bouvier des Flandres,
Briard,
German Shepherd.

If you are going to keep a dog in an apartment i recommend walking it for 30 minutes or more each day instead of walking it for say 10 minutes a day if you were living in a house. I recommend a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They are gorgeous dogs, I would know because I have two. They are very quiet dogs and very very loyal. They dont eat a lot as a bigger dog would. I highly recommend getting a Cavalier!!!!!

you need a small fluffy lap dog! go to www.akc.com and read up about the breeds you are interested in - make sure you don't get a dog that needs lots of excercise & room to roam - I have a German Shorthair Pointer that we moved into an apartment from our house and she's constantly in our way b/c she has no room to romp & play. Also consider adopting a puppy from a shelter - mutts tend to make the smartest dogs!

If you were thinking Chihuahua, then try a Miniature Pinscher Chihuahua mix! I have one and live in a one bedroom apt. I've trained him to use a puppy pee pad in a large litter box. I don't need to walk him all the time! He is the best thing that could have happened to me and my gf. I'm going to hug him right now.

A good dog for an apartment would be a ****-zu or a pug.
Also a chihuahua would be ok. These dogs don't require alot of exercise and they are small. If it was me i would get a ****-zu.

I have Silky Terrier. You can also try an Yorkshire terrier, Shih Tzu, Pomeranian, Chinese Crested, bolognese or a toy fox terrier. These are toy size dogs. Good Luck

Pomerianian, Shih Tzu, Yorkie, Jack Russell. But keep in mind that smaller dogs have a lot of energy and are constantly active so be sure it has space to run, and also they tend to yap alot.

A small dog that doesn't need a lot of exercise. Also make sure it doesn't suffer from separation anxiety, because it will tear up your apartment.

Depends on you. It has to do with your characteristics and what you want in a dog. My suggestion is a toy poodle, they don't shed a lot of hair, easy to take care of. They are loyal and obedient...
